So is that not the actual producer then? I always assumed it was chiming in at 6:00 and 6:40.

Love the album. Futures and Pasts and Industrial Estate and Rebellious Jukebox. All ace.

And remembering reading a review of the album or was the band themselves at the time. That Karl Burns on drums was the only member of the band on first name terms with his chosen musical instrument. He is very busy but it works.

I always thought he sang "what have you got in that Pigbag?" as a reference to that band at the time.

I quoted it from the Fall.org site, which is usually pretty accurate to my ears, although it's not always easy to hear what he slurs from his mushy pen. This does sound like "paper bag" to me.

Pigbag didn't form until 1980, so it couldn't be that.

  8. Well, that song lyric is from "I am Damo Suzuki" from This Nation's Saving Grace, which came out in '85... One of the high points for The Fall, along with Grotesque IMHO...

Yes! I'd forgotten about that. The lyric also nods at "Vitamin C," from Ege Bamyasi.

Your problem is clearly an overreliance on Western medicine. I got no time for that.

Maybe if we got it on clear vinyl?

IIRC there is no difference in any Step Forward pressings.

The Castle deluxe cd is the way to go.

Remember this is The Fall, audiophile masterworks do not apply!

As jimod99 says. The Castle double CD, as it has everything.

Never really thought about the mastering really, it's not something that comes into the equation normally with The Fall. What is important to note is that the mastertapes for this and the next album were assumed to be lost, and then someone found them, of all places, in some EMI vault. So they used the newly found tapes for the Castle/Sanctuary double CD.

It could be next summer before it gets to that one and that's not even halfway through the whole lot!

Not yet, but I was pretty happy with the sound on "Saving Grace" and in the Bend Sinsiter era.

I have a first US vinyl pressing of Witch Trials and it sounds good (though the cover image sucks compared to the uk).

I quite like that USA sleeve you have there, although it does look like a bootleg.

Are we gonna be covering the plethora of 'comp' albums here, too?
    I know there's a bunch of them!

You can't go wrong with the 2004 Castle/Sanctuary 2CD, good remastering job and it has all the accompanying singles and Peel Sessions. Could've done without the atrocious-sounding Liverpool '78 live set on the second CD but I won't complain too much about it.
Sanctuary also did a vinyl reissue this year which might be good.
