The Flaming Lips continue their streak of never disappointing me. While I still love The Terror more this gets a 5/5.
So I quit paying attention to them for the most part after their classic "Yoshimi" and thought, why not check this new one out. Wow! Glad I did, and I only sampled a few minutes of it, but really like what I have heard. Just called my local shop and found out the vinyl comes out next Friday and he had only one copy left he could sell of the Indie version, and he put my name on it. Really looking forward to it!
One last post before I get my copy, but I had no idea this record was inspired by Tom Petty, that makes this even more cooler/special for me!
I'm liking it, but been on a good streak with their last few proper albums in my opinion despite what critics say
Holy crap, 15 times in a row, you must really like it or need some more music to listen to (joking)! All I did was sample just a bit, not even an entire song, want to hear it pure as can be. Can't wait!
I downloaded the iTunes version last night because I am having a manic attack and haven't slept in a few days. The album is keeping me from going completely bonkers. CD should be here Tuesday.
Have to admit I'm part of the crowd that jumped on at Bulletin and then abandoned them after Mystics. I've bought every album since hoping for a return to that eras sound and melody....this sounds quite promising!
Kinda bummed, I bought the gorgeous colored vinyl version you have from a seller in the UK a couple of days back for a reasonable price, only to get a note this morning says "Sorry! we didn't have enough to go 'round, and have cancelled your order". Now all copies appear to be priced far north of a hundred bones.
I ordered the vinyl from the band’s website, not Bella Union. The digital files are mp3 only (gross), waiting to see if a lossless version will be made available. Hopefully I’ll have a copy of the LP in a few days. I’ve loved all of the pre-release tracks. Between this album and King’s Mouth, it’s been a solid couple of years of new material.
Jason Draper does a nice piece on The Flaming Lips in the October issue of Record Collector. He goes through 10 of their landmark records. I only have The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi and I'll revisit them both shortly.
Just played my EU coloured vinyl edition. Looks lovely, about like the pictures up thread (how do they get different colours for every side?). My copy was flat (!), silent and a great listen. Downloaded the hires digital from somewhere and that had a DR of 4. But the lp doesn’t sound that compressed at all. Music wise I’d say it’s quite mellow, which I like. They’ve held back on the weirdness a bit and wrote some songs for a change. Their best since Embryonic, I’d say.
