i need to be very clear on this point. There’s no such thing as an ARK run. I may walk briskly from time to time. But my running days are over.

Well, a fair number of us do discuss it. At least, versions from 1972 to 74.

Interesting. I always considered the first Tivoli show to be the most consistently well-played show from the tour. Every tune is played very well. That being said, its peaks are not as great as some of the other shows. There are no valleys, though.

It's always important to admit when you're wrong, and I was COMPLETELY WRONG about the solo being edited. I just listened closely to the entire solo in both releases, and no edits were made. They added delay to the solo on the official version, which softened the edges off of some of Jerry's "edgier" note choices.

Had Jeff Norman and his digital editor Robert Gatley wanted to make edits, however, it wouldn't have been that difficult. You can get surprisingly granular with digital editing techniques. Remember, these are multitracks, unlike 9-3-77, so all you'd have to do once the 16-track tapes were converted to digital is find the note in the track for Jerry's guitar, cut it out, find a note of equivalent length somewhere else in the solo, and copy/paste it into the point where you took out the "bad" note. Someone who's good at this could make it so smooth you'd never be able to tell it was edited. The added delay would cover up any irregularity. The overall song would remain the same length. You could also probably just run auto-tune on the guitar track for the length of that note, but that might be trickier than just editing it.

In looking at this so closely, I noticed that the official release is slightly slower than the SBD and lower in pitch. I'm assuming that the Plangent-ized official release is the one running at the correct speed.

This is more a question for The Un-Grateful Thread, but do you think downloads of the label’s releases will remain available on Bandcamp? I’ve got several saved on my wishlist that I was planning to eventually get.

Oh, absolutely. He's famous for his Zeppelin recordings in 75 and 77, namely June 21, 1977 LA Forum AKA "Listen to This Eddie." But also Queen, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Yes, Genesis, long list. He died many years ago and it was always a bit of a mystery what happened to his tapes but over the last year new transfers of his masters are being shared once a week on Dime.

The official release of 3 September 1977- Englishtown, comes from a rough mix of the multi's. Rough being the operative term as it sounds like garbage given the source tapes. Also, the official release was not Plangentized. They should Plangentize the 16's and let Norman do a proper mix of that show.

Ok, you'll nee to get past Skeletons from the closet, and since you disliked some tracks from there that are on Working mans Dead and American Beauty I will steer you to the live material for now. Find the Cornell show from 1977, Go to the Dicks Picks series: listen to DP1, 3, 4. Listen to Europe '72 and more.

I am with you. Black Peter is my favorite of the Jerry Ballads. Of course Stella Blue is stunning and perfect. Wharf rat is heavy and emotional, but for me both are what I would call obvious choices. Black Peter and To Lay me down are exquisite! I would add that the China Dolls from 74 are top shelf, and lets not sleep on Comes a Time

Right, I remember reading that Englishtown was multitracked. I couldn't immediately associate the date with that show. Maybe it was band politics that prevented the use of the multitracks. Latvala didn't have any "jurisdiction" over the multitracks, and perhaps others within the organization didn't have his enthusiasm for that show.

All these years later, it's silly to keep it in the vault--especially give that DP#15 is long out of print. It's not like they'd be cannibalizing their own release.

There was some backlash from Latvala's own family regarding the manner in which Englishtown was released. It was a touchy subject at the time.

“Wharf Rat” is my favorite of the 3 regular post-space Jerry ballads, but like “Stella Blue” and “Black Peter” too.........(though not 3 times in 5 shows in Spring 1988).

I think they wanted to release Englishtown to honor LATVALA! after his passing, and they had the rough mix so they used it. Certainly at the time of the release there were a lot of politics around which led to unfortunate decisions being made. Things are more open now.

A proper mix of Englishtown would be a hit in terms of sales, hell I'd even buy it again.

    People of Earth…

Greetings from the great beyond. I am contacting you at this time to assure you that all is well and to let you know that Dick’s Picks shall continue in my absence just as before. My plans for future releases is well-known to my teammates and they have sworn with their blood to remain true to the cause. I hope this release will alleviate any doubts concerning my posthumous powers.

I can't see them going to that much trouble. First, these guys can't even patch a reel (or cassette) flip correctly, but more philosophically, editing the notes in Jerry's solos doesn't seem a task that would really add value. Plus, once you start, where do you stop?

Not brickwalled, but, yes, JN seems to be cranking the compression/limiting knob more and more. Unfortunate, but not fatal. The end result is quite good, but yes, you can’t “crank it” too loud anymore.

Maybe that's what it is. I felt like even the Jai Alai '74 release wasn't as crankable as I'd hoped. I generally like to listen to my GD at a pretty high volume...
