Duke Ellington (p) + Aaron Bell or Jimmy Woode (b) + Sam Woodyard (dr) .... for me a supplementary vessel to "Money Jungle" ..... Duke Ellington`s ecclectic pianism definitely shines brightly .... desert island music ....

  11. A great artist I can hear at any time is Mr. Zoot Sims.

Here we have Zoot Sims with a european rhythm section and Jon Eardley on trumpet. Jon Eardley had emigrated to Germany and was for a long time member in the trumpet section of the WDR big band from Cologne. Label is ROYAL LD-4001

    "Zoot Sims In Paris 1956"
Musicians: Zoot Sims (ts) / Jon Eardley (tp) / Henri Renaud (p) / Eddie De Haas (b) / Charles Saudrais (dr)

Its a very short Lp - 2 trackls on each side and a total of 31 min.

(CD SteepleChase Think! Records Japan "45 Anniversary Collection" THCD-466) 2017 .... recorded April 18th, 1975 @ Trixi Ton Studio Munich Germany .... Clifford Jordan (ts) + Cedar Walton (p) + Sam Jones (b) + Billy Higgins (dr) .... continually underrated tenorsax ace Clifford Jordan and the "Magic Triangle" aka Cedar Walton Trio formed a match made in heaven and their releases for SteepleChase (and Muse) in the 70`s are uniformly superb .... outstanding transfer by this Think! Records Japan reissue from 2017 - but above all this is about the singular music.....

Bud Powell (p) + Sam Jones (b) + Philly Joe Jones (dr) .... Bud Powell in great shape, Sam Jones adding his propelling groove and highly alert drumming by Philly Joe Jones - everything fits perfectly here .... btw another superb King Record Japan vinyl beauty ....

IN DUO PERFORMANCES 'LIVE' AT THE JAZZ BAKERY, LOS ANGELES (2000)

This is the type of music that seems to have fallen between the cracks. That's to bad, for these recordings deserve to be heard by many more people. I particularly like the 2nd disc but both these albums are two genuinely fine duo sessions played by two remarkable musicians.

Every couple of years or so I seem to come up with a little music buying project to expand my library. I had not bought very many new titles of "classic jazz" (for me 1955 - 1969) in the past few years. I have now identified over 100 titles I'd like to add. And away I go. I'll see how long this takes.

  20. I like Alan Broadbent from the Concord Jazz Piano Solo series. Really a fine pianist. Agreed.
