Disclaimer: mostly sibling stuff... Ha! Think I may have that one too. Similar over here ... wonder how much divergence there may be in our respektive kollektions (vinyl, I mean). Wish I was home in the Big [Black] Smoke this weekend, so I could participate in the patented @Geoff738 TM method. This was in contention when I made my 1st 40 list ('twas the season, after all), but I ended up letting it go. Maybe the next 40...? (tbd) Love this Schooldays cover by local hero Ron Sexsmith.
I wouldn't include Heroes on a DB top 40. Would include Oddity, but not in the top 40. But talk about a list that would lean heavily on one period of an artist's career (Space Oddity through Scary Monsters, maybe one or two songs off Outside). Okay, I left Waterloo Sunset off my list. I don't know why, I have no excuse, I'd already finished my list through so much agonizing when Teen x pointed out that I'd overlooked it. I didn't want to go in and muck things up again, after all I had definitely made sure MISFITS was in there.... twice. BTW I didn't have any Preservation songs on my list because (shudder) I don't know those LPs. Yes today is a day for confessions. But I'm listening now, maybe not in time for the next list, but in time to add to my life. (Like this thread led me to add everything from Low Budget through Americana to my life, thanks again).
The wife's in Paris, and I foolishly invited 2 young friends of the 11-year-old to stay over. So I'm here with 4 unruly kids (including my own 4-year-old daughter), and the 22-year-old who happened to visit us but who's sleeping until 2pm. I treated them with an old French animated feature ("The King and the Mockingbird") until 11pm yesterday night, hoping they would sleep late this Sunday morning. Of course they didn't. I just squandered any "cool dad" capital I might have gained yesterday by displaying considerable amounts of terrified grumpiness in way of "good morning". I bought a few minutes by enjoining them to cook their own scrambled eggs. It might result in a house in flames, but at least I gathered a little time to write a few words here. If you get this message SEND HELP #1 Waterloo Sunset. Not on my list, though it's a great song of course. My story with this song is similar to the one I have with Days: it's been oversold to me, not by my brother this time but by a French Rock'n'roll dictionary I had at the time. So on first listen I stupidly focused on a few musical details that I didn't like so much and missed the big picture. I had to build up my liking of the song with some bits of intellect mixed up in the emotion. It worked to some extent, but nothing can replace a dazzling first experience. [They're debating which ingredients to include. My son likes to experiment with his mother's Asian sauces and oils. I'm not sure the result will be to the others' taste, but I still have a little time. They only just found the frying pan]. So the terrible news just broke out: I'm a tiny bit like everybody else after all. The only award I could ever hope to win just sadly pass me by. I have to content myself with the title of "also ran" in the INLEE race, and I'm not even the only #2!!! But I could not hope to lose to a better champion than Avid @Luckless Pedestrian , and I great his incredible performance with a great "d'oh!" As my Great Aunt used to say, quoting I don't remember who, "People like everybody else are not many" (translated litteraly). [Oh my God, they decided to cook 3 different recipes in 3 separate frying pans!] Top "next 40": I'll do my best. I already have a top 140, and there are many songs that I feel sorry I couldn't include. I will do things mostly at random, this game of "do you prefer your mother or your father" repeated endless times is going to kill me if I take it even a tiny bit seriously! [OK I'll go slice some bread now, I don't want to run to the hospital this early. I count on your prayers].
Good luck with the food preparation and a tip for next time: Don't let the kids stay up too late as you can bet they will still get up early and make you feel old and tired in the process and hide two of those frying pans to limit their options!
I know! And it's far from my first time! I never learn. They did great with the scrambled eggs though. After I complained they didn't keep any for me, one of them cooked me some, and it was great, with tasty sliced leek. Not a bad deal after all.
ON vinyl I have all the UK albums (some re-issues such as Kinks Mono Box) up to and including 'To The Bone' (UK single disc). With 7" singles, again UK only, all (excluding re-issues) in their active career from 'Long Tall Sally' through to 'Only A Dream', excluding 'You Still Want Me', which I guess will stay on the wants list looking at the price it seems to go for.
If you'd put 'Misfits' in every place in your top 40, it would have topped the poll! (probably) Might have been against the rules though...
It sounds like the setup for one of those French movies they release over here every year ("Best French comedy of the year!"). We send you over those awful Almodóvar films in retaliation
Kinks Top 263 Songs - places 101-263 All of these songs received at least one point in our recent Top 40 exercise. Where songs share the same scores they are listed in alphabetical order. What stands out to me are how many fantastic songs we still have in these nether reaches of the big list. Even at the bottom, Everybody's Gonna be Happy has a certain excitable charm. I predict some of these will be in my Next 40 list: Daylight, Shepherds of the Nation, Dandy, Creeping Jean, Mr Big Man, Lost and Found, No Return, Ring the Bells, King Kong, The Time Song, Holloway Jail, Property, etc etc. Actually, it will be a tough exercise to squeeze in everything I really like. 101 Heart of Gold 102 Nothing Lasts Forever 103 Low Budget 104 The First Time We Fall in Love 105 Arthur 106 Brainwashed 107 Look Through Any Door 108 Pictures in the Sand 109 Sitting by the Riverside 110 Lincoln County 111 Sleepwalker 112 Destroyer 113 Rosemary Rose 114 Last of the Steam-Powered Trains 115 The Informer 116 The Time Song 117 Daylight 118 Juke Box Music 119 Powerman 120 War Is Over 121 Mindless Child of Motherhood 122 Love Me Till the Sun Shines (D. Another subtle Mersey band Innuendo?? I know I've posted Ron Sexsmith's Kinks covers many times, most recently last night and it's brought me back to his Rawnboy YT channel where he did no less than 35 (THIRTY-FIVE) Ray tunes. Add to it his cover of This Is Where I Belong (on one of the official Kinks tribute CDs) and Misfits (live with Ray, already covered on the Thread), and it's almost his own top 40. Stats : he has 16 from our Top 40 (no INLEE award for him), some of the big ones (my #1 Oklahoma USA and our collective Top 2 Days and Waterloo Sunset duly included) and some deeeeeeeep kuts that we can only hope could find their way to our next list (including one song that's not even on the 263 list @Steve62 just posted!). I voted for On the Outside but it seems to be missing? Unless I missed it and it made the top 100! I’m a bit surprised at how low Dandy is considering it was a hit single, albeit not by The Kinks.
Loveless Kinks Songs. Or are they? Here are the songs on my spreadsheet that received not a single point in the Top 40 exercise. I don't think this means they are unloved. I know that for sure because I really love Uncle Son, Have Another Drink and Willesden Green (a hoot!). But as Mark has pointed out, once we had selected the songs we felt MUST be in our individual Top 40s, it left only a few places for "deep cuts". I guess the next 40 exercise is hoped to spread the love a lot wider. We'll see. EDIT: I think Something Else was the only album to avoid a song with zero points, but my analysis on that question was far from forensic. It's The Vibe. List copied, thank you! I see a few songs towards the bottom here that I probably shouldn't have wasted a vote on, hopeless misses.
I wouldn't see them as wasted votes. I don't mind seeing some of my top 40 strung in the lower reaches. It shows how many good songs they were up against.
Hmm, I seem to have voted in the new list for at least three of these. Poor 'New World' is so unloved I can't find it on any list!
Too bad Lemmy is not on vocals! I’d love to hear him sing this in his full on Motörhead voice. PS, Shel Talmy produced their “dandy” version of Dandy.

Hopefully this somewhat identifies why it seems like, to me at least, that the songs outside the top forty got very few votes, and a large proportion of the songs really shade in with one vote. Certainly there is no worthwhile guessing from me about what songs people will, or have , voted for, but with those top 40 out of the way, there will be considerable difference in at least the amount of votes available for these songs. We'll see what happens, but it seems like there could be a few surprises, but it will all come down to crossover votes
I was preparing to request an official do-over if the gap between #40 and #41 was between 1 and 5 points (per confession of @Brian x for double vote; padding the ballot box (!)) but feel that a 19 point gap is within the bounds of acceptability.
@Steve62 were there any songs that received votes from all 37 submittals? (Obsessed, I know, but just because a song didn’t chart or even make the top 100 doesn’t mean it might not be on all 37 lists.) Or that was on, say, 36 lists? (Almost consensus?)
