GnR to me seems like the last really big rock band that took over the world and believed in the rock and roll lifestyle.

In my opinion its the Chili Peppers. A bunch of addicts from SoCal who nearly broke up about 10 times(That we know of) is pretty classic rock to me. Even though they aren't as big, the Black Crowes are pretty classic rock for a 90s band. They sound like a blues band from the 70s and the members hated each other.

Classic rock is still going strong with the likes of The Sheepdogs and Blackberry Smoke along with many others.

Due to last album, it's The Who.

Due to their last two albums, it's Deep Purple.
They've handled the Autumn years far better than those two classic rock bands, IMHO.

I first heard it in the late 80’s. A New York station( I can’t remember which one) was of that format and billed itself as such. Then classic rock stations playlists ended in the mid 70’s, but it slowly accepted some 80’s bands. I avoid them like the plague, but sometimes I have to hear them to make peace with others and the newest thing I’ve heard is Guns and Roses. I’ve noticed that the stations around here are far more likely to play post comeback Aerosmith than the 70’s version.

It seems to me that Jack White/The White Stripes is the last Rock act, clearly part of the Classic Rock lineage, that got a big push from the media and became widely popular, won praise from a bunch of the old Rock veterans, showed up on stage with the Stones, etc. Maybe you could say The Black Keys or Alabama Shakes, although I think Alabama Shakes are a little too weird to fit in the Classic Rock family.

Boston still more or less going. With the last album done in 2013, could see one within the next ten years! :tiphat:

Absolutely, although I think they've been doing it for the last 6 albums. The only other classic rocker doing something inspired and nearly up to the level of their prime is Alice Cooper.

The One I Love is a prime example a song that gets regular rotation on classic rock stations.

Sloan is the most obvious classic rock band that started in the 1990's. Their music for the most part would not have sounded out of step in 1972. Out of 12 albums only Smeared and some of Twice Removed/Action Pact sound of their time. This came out 2 years ago:

Deep Purple were a heavy-rock band. They weren't 'Rock' i.e. 'Classic Rock'.

Early Hard Rock is a subset of Classic Rock. Deep Purple, AC/DC and Thin Lizzy are Hard Rock and Classic Rock.
