Remix or not, the MFSL mops the floor with the Drake Polydor.

Anyone collect live recordings of jam bands? If presented with a superior recording of a nice soundboard that happens to be "mixed" differently than other versions, I'd take the superior sounding one anyday.

Sorry if this is a threadcrap.

I agree Ivan. Live albums are an exception to these concepts imo.

    Hi,

Since this thread is Discs Recommended By Steve, and not a debate on best sounding overall disc/pressing, we have the rest of the threads in the forum for that :) , I think that all the Drake mastered AB's can be added to the list.

Saatvik what do you think? As it is your list?

I like all the original issue Dennis Drake mastered AB's. The have the correct top end (if any).... :^)

Just trying to steer this thread back on course :)

Not really "my" thread, per se, and I think we all have say in what choices should be included in the list...but anyway, I saw the thread you started and the old thread from 2002 and my impression was that Steve was the only one who thought the MoFi Fillmore was a remix. Also, his "It's different." comment makes me think that perhaps Steve is not pushing (pardon the poor word choice) either version in particular. Perhaps you could bump up your new thread so that Steve might see it? I would, but I can't find it right now for some reason though I'm subscribed to it.

I think Steve is mistaken. I'm almost positive the MFSL is the original mix. Maybe he was thinking of The Fillmore Concerts?

The Fillmore Concerts is the set that has the guy yelling "Whipping Post" cut out. Never figured out why they did that. I never cared for the remix at all. I got rid of that one pretty quick.

I believe the Bill Levinson set to which he refers is the "Mercury Anthology" from 1992.

Oh. I saw the Mercury Anthology set, but because Steve couldn't remember the name, I assumed it was the other one.

The CD with the band cover is Bill Inglot's remaster; the CD that Steve recommends was mastered by Barry Diament.

ok, so does this mean that the UPC listed on their website is incorrect? Or, are UPC #'s in general not a very precise method by which one can track down one version from another? Two different mastering numbers sharing the same UPC. Is this common?

Whichever the case, thanks for the clarification, Andreas. :)

I believe that the matrix info on the disc established which is the correct version that Steve recommended..

    Hi Saatvik,

In that post, I was simply referring to the stack of tapes I was presented with.

In this case, those old, plain brown boxes were most likely the original masters. Most times, instead of using the assembled compilation of copies, I'd go back and find the originals. Other times, like this one --and for the Rascals and Otis Redding-- I was the first one to create the compilation. And as with the Rascals and the Otis, I'd say they were the originals. (In all three cases, I applied some gentle EQ. And I do mean gentle.)

    Best regards,
    Barry

Hmm... Mine says "Made in USA by Sanyo," but is otherwise the same. Same mastering?

I think the biggest lesson to learn, is that while it may be a FLAT transfer, that is NO guarantee, that what is on the ORIGINAL master is perfection. The original mix or recording sound can range from awful to awesome. Id rather have someone like steve do some MINOR eq and FIX problems, rather than have a flawed FLAT TRANSFER. I see many wanting a flat transfer, but Never is it questioned IF a flat transfer is actually the music in its best light. Sometimes depending on the monitors and equipment used back in the day, there are minor to somewhat major EQ problems EVEN on the master tape, before ANYTHING is done to it. I guess just cause its a FLAT TRANSFER doesnt guarantee perfect sound, but just sound that hasnt been futzed with any. Sometimes you get great, sometimes not so great.

I agree with you, Kevin. This is what I said about flat transfers in another thread:

Has someone compiled a list of the CDs from this thread?

If so, please post it or PM me it?
