Seduced by the idea that something new will be better, and then finding out that it's not the case. This is especially painful if the sold/discarded item proves to be better than it's replacement. Been there, done that. I try very hard not to repeat these mistakes.
Cars, guitars, audio gear. It's all the same. Some of us are horse-traders. Others buy once and never look back. And there are many stories on the guitar forums where someone sold a brazilian Martin years ago, because they needed to make rent or pay for school. I sold my 1972 BMW 2002tii about 12 years ago, long before they became insanely expensive. I had two little kids, no room in my garage, and Minnesota winters are no place for that car. I'd like to get that one back.
Ah yes financial troubles make sense. I think that’s about the worst thing that can happen to your gear...
Vinyl is KING in my music room, but couldn't live with only one turntable, so have one set up in my office too! Here's my office rig with a Sony PS-T33 that I bought new back in the early 80's. That's a Shure V15 Type IV on there with a JICO SAS stylus. I was smart enough to buy a spare before they went kaput. The Schitt Mani handles phono pre duties and headphone amp is the Bottlehead Crack w/Speedball. Headphones here are the Beyerdynamic DT-880/250. The tuner is a Tandberg 3011A. Here's a closer view of my little Direct Drive Sony. A little Jerry Garcia in the morning never hurt anyone.
Here's my pandemic project. Found an old 301 in a hollow box plinth complete with an SME 3009 S2 tonearm that needed some new bushings. Found a plinth from Woodsong Audio from a dealer in Canada, and put everything together. Couldn't be more pleased with how everything sounds. I have 2 headshells for the SME arm, one with an Ortofon 540 MkII cart and another with a lightly used Grace F9E Ruby that's currently singing to me.
Hey StriderTB, That's an enviable setup for anyone, anywhere!! Thanks for sharing your work to put this gem together. Wish we could all hear the sound it makes!! How much does that setup weigh?
Thanks! I think it's around 50lbs all together. I'd hop on the scale holding it and do the math, but I don't want to know how much damage I've done to myself sitting on the couch for the last year.
Been searching for a long time for my ideal TT light (warm 2.7k light, dimmable so I can dim while playing and turn it up when cleaning stylus or doing a set up, no button just touching the front of the light) and finally found one :
The same reason many people do: To get cash to upgrade. I’ve also sold equipment I wouldn’t otherwise in order to pay unexpected bills. Unless you’ve never upgraded your system you must have a lot of equipment sitting around unused. JohnK
I ordered it here (big Dutch webshop) : bol.com | Ledlife Bed Leeslamp met Dimfunctie - Set van 1 - Mat Zwart It also exists in silver. Have been looking for an international / US webshop but I can't seem to find one. You can probably order from Holland, but I understand it might be too much hassle.
I think I have the same one in silver - amazon, $43 https://www.amazon.com/acegoo-Goose...Table+Light+for+Bedside&qid=1612202044&sr=8-1
Slightly different design (this one has a base) but also very nice ! Also dimmable, touch surface on front and.... a red mood light . Good when you listen to records with a girlfriend .
I've sold multiple turntables, but never had a reason to buy them back. Same for the DJ equipment I had in the past. I don't see why I ever want to buy it back. Financial troubles make sense though.
