Any update on this set? I see they're now saying end of May on Mosaic's site.

This set looks quite tempting, to say the least. The fact that they're radio transcriptions and such -- means they're more loose, extended and more open to improv. I see that a lot of tracks are 5 minutes plus! I guess it's safe to assume all this material is previously unreleased too. But most importantly, from a listening perspective, it looks to be a set one can play straight through -- given the variety of artists, material and the aforementioned "freshness" of the radio transcript aspect.

All the material will be new to me (didn't get any of the iTunes downloads), so very excited to receive this and start listening.

I got my set a couple of days ago. I haven't gotten to the Basie discs yet but the first four CDs are pretty spectacular. I'm especially enjoying the more obscure artists (from today's perspective, at least) like John Kirby and Joe Sullivan. I'm glad I never bothered with the digital releases! But even if you've got those already, there's still a bunch of music that's seeing its first release on this set. Well worth picking up.

Received my box set yesterday, and listened to the first disc last night. I'll listen to the rest over the weekend. Very impressed by the sound quality thus far! The songs do have varying degrees of surface noise in the background (mostly unobtrusive). However, the clarity is amazing considering these were recorded 1935-1940! It really does serve as a time machine, and places you next to your radio in late '30s New York City.

My copy arrived in mint condition, but it wasn't sealed. Is that the norm for Mosaic? Also, tried ripping the CDs to my hard drive via dBpoweramp, but it wouldn't read any info (Everything was 'Unknown Artists' track 1, track 2, etc). Anyone else have that issue?

  13. Lonson

Lonson I'm in the kitchen with the Tombstone Blues

The box sets are not sealed if bought from Mosaic, but the cds within should be. (In the past some sets were released to stores for sale, e.g. Nat King Cole, Kenton Orchestra, Basie 'Fifties Verve) and these were I believe all had the boxes shrink-wrapped and some had a one sheet back with discographic info under the shrink-wrap).

I think someone is going to have to tag all these tracks. . . no one apparently has yet if you didn't get any info. (I'm not a digital file person myself).

Yup, the CDs themselves were sealed but the box wasn't. Not a big deal, just wasn't used to it.

I'll try ripping the CDs again at a later date. I like to rip my CDs first thing, and then play burnt CDr copies of that. Keeps my originals in nice shape.

I recieved mine and I love it BUT... Does anyone else have this issue with the box art layout?

I have a dozen Mosaics and this one is the only one that does NOT have the print located on the spine..

    your image is missing.

are you saying that the outer box does not have a label on the spine so that you can pick it out from a shelf?

maybe you have a misprint? I don't have the set yet (will eventually), but if all are plain black spines, that is a negative.

I received mine today and the cover slick/spine lettering arrangement on it is as normal for a Mosaic box... Meaning that yours is in all likelihood a manufacturing error. They’ll probably make it right ASAP, if you send ‘em an email about it.

    Definitely do not wait.

I wish there was a "Spine Restoration Kit" that could reprint in silver or gold the proper label that can be neatly pasted on. It may not be a true original, but at least it would look good. So many Mosaic spines were seriously damaged in the period when they used hinged lids.

Does anyone notice the artifacts of any digital noise reduction in this set? In some of Mosaic's other releases - The Complete Dial Modern Jazz Sessions for example - they clearly used too much and I find the set unlistenable. I think the restorers claim no digital noise reduction was used on the Dials, but something very odd is going on in that set especially. (Maybe noise reduction was applied to their sources before they got them?) How do the Savory sides sound?

  23. Tribute

    Tribute Senior Member

The odd thing about Mosaic's Dial box, is that the Charlie Parker sessions sound significantly better than any other edition out there, except perhaps the original 78s (of which I only have about 6). Did you try some synchronized A/B comparisons between the Mosaic Dial set and other editions? I did extensive A/B comparisons with about 8 editions, both vinyl and CD, including the first pressings of the Spotlite LPs and other Spotlite-based CDs (e.g. Japan).

Lonson I'm in the kitchen with the Tombstone Blues

I agree with Tribute, this is the best that I have ever heard the Dial sessions and I don't hear noise reduction artifacts.

The Savory Collection is mastered/restored by a different team and it sounds about as good as one can expect to me.

The Mosaic Savory box is likely the only way you will ever get to hear this music. These are not commercial studio recordings. But they are recordings from music legends. If you prefer to only listen to commercial studio recordings, get the key commercial sessions by these same artists first. I recommend that anyway.

When you want more or develop a passion for the artists represented in this collection, and their history, get the Savory box.
