Saw Charles Bradley for the dozenth time the other day, and he just keeps getting better. Though his band frequently changes, Charles remains one of the most lovable artists in all of music. Also, completely unrelated, but in terms of Daptone songwriting, I think "Without a Heart" is one of the best songs written in the last decade.
There it goes, sale prices on. Was hoping the blue vinyl of James Hunter would drop to $15 or even by luck $10, $20 is more than I want to spend on that one.
argh! I blew it by keeping things in my cart too long! Everything I wanted sold out by the time I checked out - Naturally, Dap Kings Christmas, and the blue Hold On. CRAP
Yeah, me too. I missed out on the vinyl of Pure Cane Sugar. They are one of my favorites on the label.
I managed to get Charles Bradley debut LP (oddly missing from my vinyl collection), the Antibalas S/T LP and Binky Griptite's "The Stroll" 45.
Nice! I love that S/T Antibalas record. Particularly the last tune. The cover artwork and embossing is beautiful, too.
I've been jamming out to "Dirty Money" in the car on my iPod, so I'm looking forward to having it on wax.
I love the stroll, both sides!. First time I saw them years ago, they warmed up before Sharon came out with that and mellowmatic mood. His Christmas single is great too.
Amazon prime has for streaming Charles Bradley live at the house of soul, 30 minutes but very excellent. Watching the antibalas one now, aside from the incredibly awesome Che Che Cole they're not normally my thing but watching them do it is a lot of fun, some great horn players in that band. And on the Charles episode, nice to see Dave Guy, tommy TNT and homer in the band
I just got the Antibalas LP in the mail. Excellent stuff. Great musicians and some nice funky grooves. It took me a while to get warmed up to "Dirty Money" on Daptone Gold, but damn. They make some great jams. I've watched a little bit of those on YouTube, thanks for the heads up about Amazon!
I received a few more Daptone releases in the mail... • Sharon Jones' "Give the People What They Want" ltd ed. mono LP (due to this thread - thanks for costing me more $$, Steve Hoffman Forum!) • James Hunter Six' "Something's Calling"/"Talkin' 'Bout My Love" 45 (non-LP B-side!) ...and something very different from Daptone: a fuzzed out garage rock band recorded at the House of Soul! Fans of the Seeds, Thirteenth Floor Elevators, etc. are sure to love this:
All winners!!! That b-side of the James Hunter 7" is a monster. James is friggin' possessed! The original version of that tune (on his "People Gonna Talk" CD) is my all-time fave James Hunter tune. I was so stoked to find that the b-side of the 7" is a different version! That Mystery Lights is HOT. I picked up the "Too Many Girls" 7" a while back, and have been very excited about this LP. I'm going to see them live in July. I look forward to hearing was else gets released on the Wick label.
