From Cherry Red, of course. Looks like it could be fun, but lots of stuff I've never heard. For that matter, lots that I haven't even heard of (close to 40 tracks). Maybe they did some barrel scraping to fill out these five discs? Or, maybe they collected a bunch of one-off singles from bands that didn't last long enough to record an lp? What say you @Jim B. @strummer101 @thoutah et. al?

    This looks great, automatic purchase.

Cherry Red have put out a lot of great box sets the last few years, the Action Time Vision punk box was very good too.

Looks like a great compilation. Like you, there's many bands I don't know (though not quite 40). I would guess that not every band there made a full lp, or didn't last very long.
Such is the nature of the biz.
Doesn't mean anything though, if you like a song, you like a song.

I scanned the track list and unfortunately my unsung heroes didn't make the list.
    No respect.

Gang of Four is there, as they should be, but their mates at Leeds University are nowhere to be seen. An egregious oversight.

    So...here.

Great stuff! Can you make out the lyrics to the B-side of this, I'll Have To Dance Then Own My Own? I love it but can't make most of the words out at all!

Horror show/ Adultery by The Scars is another Fast single that never appears on comps. Maybe there’s licensing issues on Fast “product”, that’s one compilation album that’s really deserving of a reissue!

See, I'm wondering if it was less of an oversight and more of a question of licensing. But, yeah, a pretty big omission.

Yeah, The Scars had some killer songs.
I don't really remember who was on what label back then (if I ever knew), and you're right it could be licensing issues.

I guess I'm just used to The Mekons being off the radar. My personal experience is that among the people I know, it goes like this:

    Me: "Mekons"
    Everyone: "Who?"

At least they call it A Story of UK Post Punk, instead of The Story of UK Post Punk.
Regardless, it's a really good story...it would be nice if it spawned a sequel some day!

Were Thompson Twins really postpunk when they first started out? I knew about Scritti Politti and Human League, but...

I have a Fast Product compilation album on vinyl from 1979 which compiles the A and B sides of the first few Fast singles. It's excellent and Being Boiled by The Human League sounds the best I've ever heard it on that album too.

Various - Fast Product - The First Year Plan

The pressing and mastering on this album is very good. I recommended it to anybody who's into post punk and has a good turntable.

I've just noticed somebody else has mentioned this album above! But I'll second their recommendation.

Fantastic! One of the best singles of the era.

  21. Given that this is Cherry Red, I'll hold off until the corrected discs are issued. :)

  22. On a similar front, one wouldn't have guessed Dead Or Alive came out of the postpunk scene either, given the sugar rush synthdisco they made their name with. Too bad their early singles never got reissued or turn up on these comps, there was some good stuff in there.
