But I thought they were announced as one package with different release dates. So in short unlikely to be more 80 titles
I’m honestly even more thrilled with this 2020 list than I thought I would be. I already own several of these but only on CD so I’m in for the whole shebang. Some really great stuff in here. Very excited!
If Blue Note is making a nice profit on the 80th series, they will likely find some way to continue it
So, from what we knew last month, 10 of 13 titles will be officially in the 2020 TP series. Jackie McLean's "Demon Dance", Gerald Wilson's "You Better Believe it", and Ornette Coleman's "Love Call" did not make the cut and could possibly be included in the future. In addition to the 10, the following titles were added: Lonnie Smith – All In My Mind (Blue Note, 2017) Stanley Turrentine – That’s Where It’s At (Blue Note, 1962) Jackie McLean – It’s Time (Blue Note, 1964) MUST HAVE for ME Horace Silver – Further Explorations (Blue Note, 1958) Jimmy Smith – Prayer Meetin’ (Blue Note, 1963) Herbie Hancock – My Point of View (Blue Note, 1963) MUST HAVE for ME Duke Pearson – The Phantom (Blue Note, 1968) Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Roots & Herbs (Blue Note, 1961) McCoy Tyner – Tender Moments (Blue Note, 1967) Donald Byrd – Byrd In Flight (Blue Note, 1960) Lee Morgan – The Rajah (Blue Note, 1966) As of today, I am in for @ least 8-10 titles. To date, I have already bought more TP and BN 80th Annv. titles that I said I would early on. Thanks to this forum!!! My pockets are hurting and will continue to do so next year with no clear end in sight.
Went back to Sam Rivers Contours tonight. What a tremendous album. Joe Chambers performance on drums really stands out.
Yes, I used to have the page saved, I think they may not have announced them all at once though, just the first several months and possibly announced the rest later, but it was a few years ago now.
They shouldn't need any excuse to continue reissuing titles and have hopefully learned their lesson about the market for quality mastering and pressing, whether labeled as 80ths or not they should continue down this path and hopefully will as long as there's enough of a market.
Another big announcement still to come for 2020--something Joe hinted at before but did not appear on the list.
I'm hoping the "Roots and Herbs" cover art gets a do-over. This looks like some kind of waxworks Blakey....
That would be amazing. I check the Blue Note Review website once a week to see if there's been any hint of volume 3 yet.
Haven't decided if I'm more excited for those on my wish list or the more unfamiliar ones I'm gonna get to know and love. Here are my faves at start (surely to change at finish)... Stanley Turrentine – That’s Where It’s At (finally!!!) Bobby Hutcherson – Oblique (just as Joe promised ) Jackie McLean – It’s Time (anything McLean, really) Tina Brooks – The Waiting Game (to complete the set) Donald Byrd – Byrd In Flight (good enough to have the Classic and TP)
I love how you guys are posting favorite lists of the 2020 TP’s, like am I the only one that is simply going to buy practically every one lol
They were all announced at once. There were hints that the series might continue after those 100 titles and five more albums ('Let 'Em Roll', 'Fuchsia Swing Song'...) were actually released in 2016. And that was it.
Thank you for posting this. While I see a number of titles in the Tone Poet series I want to pick up later in the year, none of the January ones are currently on my radar (partly because I don't know the titles as well). I saw a few preorders for the 80th Anniversary series that I want. At $17.49, they should be a bargain (as long as there aren't weird sonic abberations). I ordered three titles - Basra, Buhaina's Delight, and the Lee Konitz double-LP Alone Together. By the way, all orders include free shipping, so that is a bargoon.
Basra is a wonderful album. You’re in for a treat. I have the Music Matters version. The album is worth the price simply for the song Lazy Afternoon. A must-have record.
Is the Tone Poet series seen as a unofficial continuation of Music Matters? If so does that mean they won’t be repeating any titles?
I’m really into my jazz at the moment, enjoying mellow pieces like Idle Moments, Herbie’s Speak Like A Child and Goodbye To Childhood, Lee Morgan’s Search For The New Land, Miles’s All Blues and Mademoiselle Mabry. Which TP titles either from this year or next do you think I’d enjoy?
