Definitely. Can still find a lot of great second hand stuff out here (Amsterdam). Bought a beautiful copy of Way Out West yesterday. Just got into the jazz collecting, it's just that all those Blue Note, Impulse, Prestige releases look amazing.
Single or double, I’m guessing with a test pressing now done the decision has been made or is that still FYEO?
I hope Joe continues to release Andrew Hill titles. I would love "Dance with Death". Incredible album and the only decent copy is a Japanese King. Not sure how well the Heavenly Sweetness series was received...
Interesting list. I won't be needing Dexter's "One Flight Up" as I have the great Cisco LP. I'll pass on Hill's "Passing Ships", which is not one of my favorite Hill dates and besides that, they'll most likely be using Malcolm Addey's digital master to cut this LP and I have that mix on the CD. Clark's "My Conception" is a nice date and previously only available on vinyl from Japan.
They don’t cut from digital when tapes are available. In fact, you can see them cutting this one from tape here: @jazzsaraswati shared a video on Instagram: “Andrew Hill’s magnificent Passing Ships will get its first ever LP release in the 2021 Tone Poet series for Blue Note Records. Passing…” • Aug 23, 2020 at 9:19pm UTC
Just heard from Joe, he told me that they wanted to maximize the fidelity to it's fullest, so A, B, and C sided...oh yeah!!!
that's the best option! I prefer 3 sides to 4 if possible ( and i suppose it saves Kevin Gray a precious lacquer!)
Do you have any idea why Jackie McLean Let Freedom Ring has not been reissued? It was announced in the Music Matters 2007 promo folder as no. 48: MMBST 84106.
I don't know why MMJ didn't do it. Let Freedom Ring was in the 75th series, and looks like it was reissued in Europe recently. It is only 4 tracks, would they cut side one at 13;17 at 45rpm? Getting close to the limit, maybe over. 1 Melody For Melonae 13:17 2 I'll Keep Loving You 6:14 3 Rene 9:57 4 Omega 8:30 Vinyl Record Mastering-Recommended Side Times
Nah, that’s a myth; blank discs are no way to set up anti-skate I’m afraid. Besides, playing the blank side totally trashes it with ugly scoring + even if blank discs did work that scoring means it’s no longer blank.
Look at it as the "third side" is the bonus. The Passing Ships session has never been released on vinyl. We'll be getting the full track sequence, which runs beyond the normal single LP (it runs about 48 minutes) 1 Sideways 4:06 2 Passing Ships 7:04 3 Plantation Bag 8:29 4 Noon Tide 9:48 5 The Brown Queen 6:19 6 Cascade 6:25 7 Yesterday's Tomorrow 5:08
I noticed in the promo on BN for that box set also two other records. One is Bobby Hutcherson's Patterns. Also shown is Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers Africaine. How do you buy that records?
Just close your eyes and pretend they're Music Matters releases, folks don't bat an eye at paying $100 a record for those puppies. At least you get some extra goodies in this package.
