“they may yet inspire a viable rock-culture politics“ - effing yawn. What about music?

I did. Got a normal reply that it was “awaiting fulfillment.” They took my paypal already. We’ll see. Just wondering if anyone had ordered from them or if anyone was still looking for a source.

Utopia Records in Australia has some interesting comments about the Fear Inoculum vinyl...

Built in turntable sounds awful. I really don't care for all the gimmicky stuff, just give me a well mastered and pressed album with a nice jacket and sleeves. That's it.

it’s probably a blown up version of the cd, i.e. a 12” video screen with hopefully a well mastered and pressed record somewhere inside of it

The thing about Adam is that he's a visual artist as well as art director and the guitarist for Tool. To Adam, it's the whole "package", so to speak. It's an experience.

Well if it was it was brilliant, because given the CD version has a screen, anything is possible.

Just surprised anyone believed that to be anything other than a joke.

I do agree that a well mastered, well pressed album in a quality jacket and sleeve trumps any special packaging, but I also appreciate the extra effort that goes into the artwork/experience of a new Tool album. Adam is quite a talented guy.

I get the impression from the Utopia Records comments that it will be unique from the CD packaging, but I have nothing to support that postulation.

That was smart. I'm just glad I don't have to get in line when they open that day. I buy a lot of vinyl from my store and know the owner quite well, so at least my copy will be held. Normally I can buy new releases on Thursday ( a day earlier) but the owner said their supplier might not ship to arrive until Friday because of what this is. I hope that's not the case, but after 13 years, I don't think an extra day will bother me.

That was funny. I think most of us already have our turntables...would not put anything past folks that market music these days, look at some of the RSD crap that has been coming out. Special turntables that only play 3" records...I'm sure a rollicking good time can be had with those...time to bring back cereal box plastic records I say.

Tool should release a special edition laserdisc. Then you get all the hipster cred of retro packaging, all the joy of a large physical artwork, all the sonic benefits of digital, and all the cost and inconvenience of vinyl, in one amazing product. Everyone wins!

With Fear Inoculum getting an "insane" vinyl package, apparently, it reminds me how disappointing the visuals of the Lateralus vinyl are. They easily could have made a (very expensive) premium version that replicated the translucent CD packaging perfectly – a series of inserts of the layered paintings, plus clear vinyl, all housed in a slipcase with the same outer design. I'd gladly fork over the dollars for that.
