Surprised I was the only one who voted or mentioned Open Range and any the Bourne films. I would've thought they would have been more popular. I get that I'm in the minority for Lars & The Real Girl and couple other films.

Another honorable mention to High Fidelity which I though would've been mentioned too.

The films gradually get weaker, both in quality and quantity, toward the latter years of the decade. Much stronger the first few years. There are still some real standout films. But 2010 - 2020 is an even worse decade to choose from. Neither are as strong as the 80s and 90s for me (and even earlier decades).

A film I’ve watched a few times if it was an expanded list, then I’d include
    The Island

The films subsequently post 2011 are big on cgi ..hello MCU. Don’t mind them myself .. but early 2000‘s more varied.

Oh yes, both looks are great. A friend of mine once brought along the DVD of her western comedy "The Legend of Frenchie King", she looked great in that one, one of her last films. And the dreamy look she sported in films like "Le Mépris" or "And God Created Woman"... amazing

The story of her and John is truly fascinating, I think. Even though they apparently talked very little, his years-long admiration of her that led up to this meeting would almost be worth writing a book about.

Off the top of my head for the most part -

    Munich
    Small Time Crooks
    Road to Perdition
    The Departed
    The Assassination of Jesse James
    Panic Room
    There Will be Blood
    O Brother Where Art Thou
    Burn After Reading
    ...
and my biggest "guilty pleasure" film of the early 2000s because NOBODY but me loves it: The Ladykillers

A film or two by Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu, Robert Altman or Pixar could easily make my list too.

Upon review, I guess I'm most surprised David O. Russell made nothing of note, nothing good at all from 2000-2009. But the films outside these years, wow!

I'm not really a movie person per se. Watching movies is just not something I do very often.

That being said, here's an odd assortment of some of my favorites:
    • Shrek (2001)
    • The Princess Diaries (2001)
    • Scooby-Doo (2002)
    • Finding Nemo (2003)
    • Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
    • The Incredibles (2004)
    • Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith (2005)
    • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005)
    • Serenity (2005)
    • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005)

    Honorable Mention (from TV):
    • Stephen King's Rose Red (2002)

City of God is #1. Then the next 9 are in a fairly loose order.

    City of God
    Mulholland Drive
    Requiem for a Dream
    Spirited Away
    I'm Not There
    American Splendor
    Children of Men
    Shaun of the Dead
    Pan's Labyrinth
The Life Aquatic with Steve Sissou

The 2nd 10 - depending on my mood, any film from the top half of this list could creep into the top 10.

    Donnie Darko
    28 Days Later
    Borat
    LotR: Return of the King
    Ginger Snaps
    The Fall
    The Incredibles
    Ju-On: The Grudge
    Battle Royale
    Moon

Good thread - great film, seen it twice. No spoilers, but there are some scenes that are just heartbreaking (I'm thinking of the kid with the gun who "had to make a choice" between 2 others) - brilliant film.

I watched a follow up - a short documentary on where they are today. Wish I could remember where but it was just a couple years ago if that.

    Wait, found it:

I very much enjoy these films, even purchased Lars & The Real Girl as a gift for friends, who also enjoyed it, but had to make cuts somewhere! Others such as Lars & The Real Girl as "quiet, understated, quirky, yet rather poignant films are "*The Way, Way Back"/2013 & Dan In Real Life/ 2007. I wouldn't say I'm necessarily a Steve Carrell fan, but he is in both of these films. I also enjoy Crazy, Stupid, Love. I frequently enjoy comedians when they downplay it in pieces which are more dramatic, i.e. my top choice for this thread is August Rush (Robin Williams is in it) & not far from that - though I didn't really order them - is Reign Over Me (Adam Sandler also in a dramatic role).
1990s films - probably my favorite, particularly 1996-'97.

    *Trailer doesn't do it justice.

No Country for Old Men is my favorite from that decade.
Second is either Lost in Translation or A History of Violence, depending on my mood i guess, with the least favored at 3.
After that, in no particular order:
    Gladiator
    Burn After Reading
    Master and Commander
Sunshine Cleaning (didn't see this on anyone else's list, but great performances by Amy Adams and Emily Blunt. Great supporting cast, too.)
    Mystic River
    The Cooler
    The Departed

I'd also like to give an honorable mention to both Revolutionary Road and The New World.

I've been meaning to watch that. There's also a series City of Men - Wikipedia , and then a movie based on that series. I'm less certain about watching these - the film is such a fresh explosion of energy and style I don't want to be let down.

I have a question about one of my favourites, The Lives of Others 2006, which may be a spoiler for some.

When Dreyman the playwright finds out he had been tapped/surveilled all along, he visited the Stasi spy archives to gain access to his Stasi file. Finally a clerk comes to him wheeling a tea trolley overfull with stacks of files. The clerk gruffly says something like "respect" or was it just "you're welcome"? Respect as in you're obviously a man of note, whose deeds occupied the Stasi for an exceptional amount of intense scrutiny?

I can't come up with ten.
I prefer movies from the '40s and '50s over other decades, the '60s next - I could come up with ten '90s ones probably - but not this century

I love movies, I hate this century.
