Except Three Imaginary Boys is their debut and Boys Don’t Cry is a Beatles-style US hack job release with singles and other stuff thrown in. World War is a truly awful track.

Also, listen to their first two singles followed by 3IB. When you then hear the Boys Don’t Cry single after those (including its excellent b-side) it really stands out as an anomaly. It doesn’t sound like anything on the first or second albums. True sign of a classic single-only release imo.

The Boys Don't Cry US album is good though, I had it on vinyl aged 16 and loved it. It is actually a nicer listen than Three Imaginary Boys even if that's the 'proper' release.....and I like World War too! :D It's better than that dire Foxy Lady cover.

Boys Don't Cry is so much better than 3IB. I couldn't care less which one is official.

Agree that Foxy Lady is pretty bad, although that really gives the album a UK punk “I don’t care” feel. As long as the album has Accuracy, I’m good.

That's all I got, so I'll say Disintegration for number five, 'cos I haven't heard it, but have heard about how great it is since it's release. It's my favourite unknown Cure album.

Join The Dots and some of the deluxe reissues show The Cure are close to Dylan for leaving better material off the proper albums - but at least they put them on B-sides and don't bury them in the vaults for 40 years. Then again, maybe there is a Cure vault filled with even better material, although somehow I doubt it. Either way, with this forum's love of experimenting with editing and rearranging albums, one can build a great Cure album from the material of virtually every era.

Very strong, interesting, diverse catalog from a band that, superficially, appears to have an almost myopic, parodiable POV, but is, really, in fact, stylistically all over the map. Very interested in hearing their new album.
