I saw him speak once about 45 years ago. He was something. There was no one else remotely like Hunter S, nor was there anyone else that could handle a cigarette holder quite like he did. , Sly's response to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, both are stone cold classics of the time, and forever going forward. There are really no words that describe this record. The music does all the talking. With that being said, listening to it at this moment strikes me as a soundtrack of the history of a living, breathing America; the highs, the lows, and the never-ending fight to survive.
More Joelle Leandre from the Wooden Box lots of great double bassists on the planet but Lady Joelle might be the most otherworldly of all of them - the bow and her voice gives me goosebumps every time. Pure improvising genius.
I just watched the Dragon dock with the space station. Cool! And I read that the astronauts wake up tune on their first morning in space was planet caravan from Sabbath. Listening to George Jones while waiting for the hatch to be open in about 80min...
George's first record after he and Tammy split. When it comes to heartbreaking country songs, I don't think that nobody could touch him.
I've listened to a lot 'Mr Joe' over the years, many hours of pleasure in fact. He was doing some extraordinary work in the late 60's. 1969's Power to the People is yet another keeper in a long line of them.
Another Joelle Leandre show/disc: duo with Fred Frith recorded live on June 11th @ Les Instants Chivires, Montreuil CD #5 from 8 disc set “A Woman’s Work”
It was a great seeing the americans and the russians together on the space station. Teamwork for the greater good of human kind. More mid 70s post divorce songs from the possum. I've looked the whole world over, seen all there is to see And romance in Rome was so heavenly I've sailed across the ocean just soaking up the sun But you're the best living that I have ever done I've laid on satin pillows and slipped away with time Yes, I have had the finest the women and wine I played around with midnight until the morning come But you're the best living that I have ever done
On to Disc 3: Two more from 11/2/61 (first appearance of Greensleeves) and then moving to the 11/3 selections. Now it’s Friday night in Greenwich Village...
The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories). Steven Wilson, 2013. An terrific album. Wilson embraces the classic progressive rock sound from the 70's (there are traces of Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, you name it), but without sounding like a mere copycat. The mellotron parts were recorded using King Crimson's MKII mellotron (yes, the same one heard on those legendary albums).
Guided By Voices Bee Thousand plus a bunch of others I've logged recently, and lots of individual songs from the post-2010 albums too
What a pleasure it is to put this on anytime and enjoy the heck out of it. A great record of great americana, great songs, great music... The sunlight plays upon my window pane I wake up to a world that's still the same My father said to be strong That a good man could never do wrong In a dream I had last night in America A wise man was telling stories to me About the places he had been to and the things that he had seen A quiet voice is singing something to me An age old song 'bout the home of the brave in this land here of the free One time one night in America
Patti Smith Group- Radio Ethiopia Laurie Anderson- Mister Heartbreak Al Anderson- Pay Before You Pump Nick Gravenites and Animal Mind- Kill My Brain Earth Opera- s/t Boz Scaggs- Moments
Also Vampire on Titus is close to the top for me but harder to get into, I'd start with Propeller out of the stuff mentioned
I love this album. The subject matter is pretty dark but very thoughtful. Guthrie Govan is such a great guitar player.
Gee, it's finally happening. The webpages also features an entry for the second volume of Archives with an August release date. Terrible times for my wallet, Neil, you should have released this a couple of years ago.
