It's a shame that The La's didn't become what Oasis became.

Oh, I’m anything but upset my friend. The biggest band around 1995? Hmmm....my vote goes to The Smashing Pumpkins. Not necessarily on the merits of sales, but international reputation. It seems they had quite a large following and their masterpiece (IMHO) Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness catapulted them into a whole new musical stratosphere.

I never really saw much of them (for reals) on TV at the time but she was my favourite.
I actually truly do think that Spice World is the sequel to A Hard Day's Night

Emma was alright, though she sadly lacked the Gallagher brothers monobrow. You can't have everything.

I only just found out that their demise was mostly due to a studio not having the actual sixties valve sound they thought they were gonna get when they booked in.
Haven't yet read the book where this is detailed but I will get back on it. Sounds typically scouse legendary.
The Beatles split because a girlfriend sat on somebody's amp and The Las split because they couldn't get a refund.

    :p

I thought their demise was due to them only having one decent single.

Well in the case of the RIAA, Alanis Morissette.
And truth maybe is that Jagged Pill ended up being more influential than anything else coming out of the mid 90s,
except for the rock-rap bands of the era.

Another thing I'd note on these sales figures, I've heard with the RIAA, you (artist or label) have to pay to get updated sales figures.

Alanis vs Oasis in 95/96, Jagged Pill released 4 months before Morning Glory

    US: 16-4
    UK: 10-14

A special mention here for the mighty Supergrass who I think blew Oasis away in the songwriting and musicianship departments.

They were absolutely massive this side of the pond .
I remember hearing them saying non stop "we're the best band in the world" & you would hear fans repeating the same thing.

Who bought those millions of records then? UK sales account for less than a quarter of total sales for each of the first two albums.

I saw them at the Oakland Colosseum in 2008. Place was packed. Ryan Adams opened for them.

I don't disagree with what you have said. I did put a qualifier on this though, Alanis Morissette is not a band.

    I'd prefer oasis to Alanis.

  25. Yes, they were the biggest band in the world for a few years in the 1990s. MTV never really got behind Oasis much in America, which seems to have hurt their reputation here during their biggest years. America was still hung up on Nirvana when Oasis rose to fame.

This question always brings out the same usual suspects that like self-inserting their own personal favorites for the title.
