How's this box? I've heard comments from both sides of the fence. How much of this material is previously unreleased?

My brother recommended a cd for me that I purchased and just got a chance to listen to. It's the famous "Will The Circle Be Unbroken" by the Nitty Gritty Band although it is actually a collection of famous country/folk performers backed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. With the success of the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack, Capitol re-released this cd just a couple of months ago. Aside from the great songs the sound quality is also extremely good.

Now understand, Iam NOT a country music fan in the general sense of the word or at least what country was about in the 80's through today, but this is something entirely different. I would definitely recommend this one to anyone interested in traditional country, bluegrass or folk music.

Gosh, isn't that Atlantic box a killer...I've spent many weekends with that one. I tend to listen to the older material the most, too.

I have 'Mermaid Ave. 1' and it's been spun more than most. Haven't heard 2 though. Is it as good?

Ahh...'Folk Singer' MFSL...anyone who does not have this should go find a copy imediately...one of my favorite MoFi's!

Shuggie Otis - Here Comes Shuggie Otis, epic LP
Bob Dylan - Highway 61, Sundazed mono LP
    T. Rex - Electric Warrior 20th Anniversary CD
Beatles - Please,Please Me - Stereo EMI LP
CCR - S/T, original Fantasy LP
Grateful Dead - Working Man's Dead, form the Golden Road box
Billie Holiday - From The Original Decca Masters, DCC
    Green Day - Dookie, CD

And depending on how long accoustic sounds takes to deliver hopefully soon the first 3 CCR LPs. My Red Trumpet order should be here today so Axis Bold As love in mono should be spinning tonight along with one of those new Japanese Beatle Cds of HDN.

Ain't it. Was suprised to hear they found a working master tape for "Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee". I have the vinyl for 3-4 of the sets, and they used a shallac disc to master that song. The CD uses the actual tape, as well as other corrections. Ray Charles, The Robins, heck even the Capitols and the Drifters. Just gorgeous stuff. An Atlantic fruit salad!

RE: Wilco - Friend turned on me to this set. He bought number two as soon as he heard about it. Both are equally as good, but #1 is spun more often. Love that sound.

Folk Singer - Donno what the hell happened that day. Some audio angels came down and made things perfect for that recording. Performance is stellar. I wonder if Muddy ever knew just how good that set was.

"Black Buddah painting the goddam ceiling, and he's the king of the blues" - Keith Richards commenting on catching Muddy doing odd jobs, 25X25 video)

Grant, you don't have the Atlantic box?

Man, that's a quote and a half...I'll have to remember that one. Perfect description!

I can't live without the Atlantic box and the Rhino Sun Sessions box. Speaking of Sun, Charly put out a great Sun box about a decade ago, too. This is what rock & soul are made of...

Absolutely. Wilco and XTC are my favorite currently existing bands (although XTC is hardly a "band" these days). The Mermaid sets are both fantastic ... but of course the past week and a half I have been listening non-stop to their new Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, a delightfully perverse and bizarre set. Can't get enough of it.

Also popular lately 'round my parts:
When I Was Cruel, Elvis Costello (CD)
    Stereo/Mono, Paul Westerberg/Grandpa Boy (2-CD)
Imagine, John Lennon (orig. UK LP)
Anthology of American Folk Music (compiled by Harry Smith, 6-CD box)
The Genuine Basement Tapes, Bob Dylan (5-CD boot)

I forgot to mention one more blues CD I've been listening to a lot, and it's both a sonic and music delight. Jimmy Rogers, "Blues, Blues, Blues". Mick Jagger and Keith doing "Trouble No More", Jeff Healey, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant and I think Taj Mahal & Stephen Stills guest star. Last bit of work before poor Jimmy left us. Possibly his best too, barring "Bluebird".

Really. Get it! It'll blow your mind.

I have the LP and I used to love it! Has Emmylou Harris et all? Probably still do - I've not seen it lately, let alone heard it. I really hope it did not disappear during the 'troubles' ..... I had a few problems just before Christmas '00.

This must be the remaster, not the original CD release? Thanks for the heads up!

Live Tull!?! Woo-hoo, I'm gonna visit a CD store on the way home!

I just can't seem to get Toga Rock 1 & 2 off the CD player. Then it's 10CC, some Deep Purple, Underground Radio vol. 1 (gotta ger vol 2!!!!) Sammy Davis JR GH Vol 2 and the Beatles Red Album (all CDs). Tonight it's Beatles Vinyl Night! (WAF factor is +10 - she's not home! :D )

I also just picked up Will The Circle Be Unbroken and have been listening all week. I love it. No Emmylou though, from what I can see.

    Ray Charles - Atlantic box

Lots of Excello/AVI cd's I've been picking up lately - especially the great Roscoe Shelton. Also, I just received another Roscoe Shelton cd today - Let It Shine - the liner notes say he's mentioned in the Beatles song "Dig It". What's the deal? I have to check that out.

Tighten Up Tighter - A Choice Collection of Funk 45's (Pure Records)

This one is out of print, but available at www.dustygroove.com. A fascinating glimpse into the past. (Roscoe Shelton on AVI is also out of print, but available at walmart.com) These 45's probably didn't sell 1000 copies when they were released, you won't find any of the artists listed at allmusic.com. But some of it is really great and the rest is entertaining for sure - cheap too. Buy it now. :D

I really like what I have listened to so far, and I will, hopefully get through the whole thing this weekend.

Being a big XTC fan, I would have bought this box set even if someone told me it was total junk.

I would say that about 80% of the box set is unreleased material consisting of demos, live cuts, unused versions, and outtakes. And there are 2 hidden tracks (unreleased) to boot on discs 2 and 3 (if I remember correctly). These are truly hidden cuts since you have to back the player up before track 1 on both these discs to hear the hidden tracks. Unfortunately, not all CD players can back the laser up to a point before track 1. My DVD-ROM drive on my computer goes crazy when I load those two discs in and locks up my computer. My CD-RW drive won't back-up to play these cuts. My XA777ES and my C333ES SACD/CD players won't allow the laser to back up prior to track 1 to play these cuts either. I actually had to use my daughters $99 GPX boombox (she is only 8 years old so she doesn't care about sound quality so the boombox is good enough for her uses) to access these two tracks. Who would have thought that expensive SACD/CD players wouldn't access the data on disc 2 and 3, whereas a cheapo boombox would.

If you have more than a passing interest in XTC I would say this box set is worth the purchase.
