I play albums when I listen to music ( either on vinyl or SACD ). I usually play a complete album even if only a few of the songs are "hits". Occasionally when I just want to kick back and simply enjoy one hit after another I play a greatest hits album. Here are my four favorite greatest hits albums. The first three are from my misspent youth and the last from being a member here and our host. What are your favorite greatest hits? albums. The Rolling Stones - Big Hits ( High Tide and Green Grass ) Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits ( 1967 ) Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975 Roy Orbison - The All Time Greatest Hits of Roy Orbison All are available on vinyl, The Stones and Dylan are also on SACD.
The Rolling Stones ' Big Hits ( High Tide and Green Grass' and ' Through The Past Darkly ' were the first two greatest hits albums I had ( I think ). Both great but the former was\is one of the best, if not the best , collections ever. But! I have to say that ' Sly and The Family Stone's Greatest Hits ' is an incredible album. Not a weak second on it.
Being that I never really could get through any of their studio albums, my favorite greatest hits album--by far--is Chicago's Greatest Hits. It's from 1975 or so, and the cover shows the band on a scaffold painting their logo. It's all the Chicago I need.
Roxy Music's Greatest Hits (sadly never released on cd) was perfect. Roxy Music - Greatest Hits | Releases | Discogs To this day I still start singing "There's a new sensation...." after I hear Virginia Plain.
For starters- 1976 Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits 2007 The Essential Elvis Presley 2004 The Complete Hit Singles 2010 1962-1970
Oh man, good topic...often greatest hits albums are not that interesting to me, but there are a few that I'll always love and continue to pull out. Some are definitely better put together than others!

Aerosmith - Greatest Hits (1980). Ten great tracks. This tape lived in my boombox a couple entire summers.
I have a best-of Bryan Ferry\Roxy Music CD that contains a handful of the tracks on ' Roxy Music's Greatest Hits '. It's good but lacking that weird Roxy vibe.
From my personal stash it is 'Hawkwind greatest hits' - Charity shop find, cleaned up it is very good indeed.
Association Bread Buffalo Springfield Chicago Doors 1st Eagles Monkees Simon and Garfunkel Spanky and Our Gang
Neil Young - Decade. I have all his albums from that period, but Decade is the perfect quick fix and absolutely essential for anyone just getting into Neil's music. Pet Shop Boys - Discography. Again, perfect comp of their first (and best) albums. In fact, all the PSB I need. The Cure - Standing on a Beach (released as Staring at the Sea in some countries). No hesitation recommending this excellent comp to anyone wanting to explore The Cure for the first time.
12 Gold Bars - Status Quo - 1980. A fantastic retrospective of their hits through the 1970s, their most productive boogie rock period.
