I love black and white movies. Maybe it’s because everything was B&W on the TV when I was a kid. Or maybe it’s from watching all the Universal horror movies on the late show. Black and white looks stunning when done right but a great story a great in any medium. In no order: King King The Great Dictator Godzilla (He never looked better.) Citizen Kane Young Frankenstein (The funniest movie ever named.) I could go on. Maybe I should have made this a top 10! What are yours?
Can't choose only 5 but these are my picks today: Third Man Cape Fear The servant It always rains on Sundays Kind hearts and Coronets.
Luis Buñuel: L'âge d'or (France, 1930) Joseph H. Lewis: Gun Crazy (US, 1950) Bernhard Wicki: Die Brücke (West Germany, 1959) Richard Lester: A Hard Day's Night (UK, 1964) Jerzy Skolimowski: Le départ (Belgium, 1967) Le départ a.k.a. The Departure is psychotically obscure for reasons that are a total mystery to me. It's funny, it stars Jean-Pierre Léaud, involves a lot of cool classic cars, and has a superb jazz score by Krzysztof Komeda.
It's a Wonderful Life A Hard Days Night The Fastest Gun Alive It's A Gift The Wrong Man and many others.
A Hard Day’s Night Treasure of Sierra Madre A Face in the Crowd The Bank Dick Cape Fear Dr. Strangelove ….etc. yeah a lot more than 5
The Birds - Alfred Hitchcock Psycho - Alfred Hitchcock The Fly - Kurt Neumann Mr. Smith Goes To Washington - Frank Capra Schindler’s List - Steven Spielberg
Don't have a lot that I can recall off hand but definitely: Young Frankenstein Clerks and I think I liked the old Bing Crosby movie Holiday Inn, although I haven't seen it in years. Probably a couple of Hope/Crosby "Road" movies would make the list too.
''KING KONG '' ''GOJIRA / GODZILLA , KING OF THE MONSTERS '' ''CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON '' ''THE SEVEN SAMURAI '' '' THRONE OF BLOOD ''
Sunset Boulevard Ace in the Hole/The Big Carnival-- it was b/w, right? (been a long time) The Third Man Treasure of the Sierra Madre I'll hold on the 5th
