That's my favourite version as well. Great sonics one of those band in your room discs.

  2. Ditto the MFSL. It blows away all other versions I've heard.

I've enjoyed my P35D-20034 (I couldn't justify paying the going price for the MFSL). Thanks to Dave for the recommendation and to Darcy for the disc! :righton:

  4. It is expensive now but I bought it when it first came out so it was worth it to me.

definitely a bargain at the original price

  6. I find Clayton's bass playing has no bounce, rhythm or bloom.

MFSL for me but I haven't heard the Japan first pressing.

With as many recommendations as you make and with your vast collection, it's almost ESSENTIAL that we teach you how to do this!:righton:

    1. Download Audacity. This is a free audio editing program that will allow you to make 30 second (and below) clips that are legal for posting. It's very easy to use once you get the hang of it. It's also fun for playing with EQ!

    2. Since you already have EAC, rip the track in question to a WAV, FLAC, or 320 kbps mp3.

    3. Open Audacity and highlight everything BUT a 30 sec. clip. Delete all but said clip.

    4. Click "File," "Export" and make it into whatever format you ripped it as.

    5. Get yourself a Megaupload account (it's free!).

    6. Upload the files to Megaupload.

    7. Post the links here!

If you need any more help, there are people MUCH better than me at this thing (I'm a Mac, you see...).

If we can successfully pull this off, it will help out the forum TREMENDOUSLY and will benefit your reviews to a GREAT degree!

    Rock on. \m/

A bit crude, but EAC also has the ability to edit files, which for the purposes of creating samples is usually fine.

Do that, Dave. I work with audio daily, so I always do things the complicated way!

I've got the P35D - and it does sound very good.

Haven't heard the MoFi, but I was told the P35D would be "enough" and it sounds much better than the US original - which is anemic in comparison.

What tracks would you like to hear samples of? I can upload a few FLACs.

That would be great and thank you. How about tracks 1 and 2?

I see that now, I guess one day I'll have give them a try. So far I'm just a rip, burn and graphics EAC user.

I like the MFSL best (bought it new when it came out and liked it much better than the orig US Island), but have not heard the Japan P35D.

For the record, I've been drifting back and forth between the Japanese 1st Pressing and MFSL for about a year. The JFP sounds "flat" to my ears and I don't mean in a good way. Being in the younger 10% of this forum, I like my bass and smiley-faced EQ doesn't necessarily bother me. I mean, when you go to a concert, you HEAR the bass! I don't hear it as well at the JFP. The MFSL, on the other hand, has all the low-end that I need. Maybe it's a symptom of being young, but that's the way I am with my music. It also helps that the MFSL is more detailed (due to using better ADCs, I'm sure) and "fun" to listen to.

Well, tastefully of course. I like to be able to HEAR it and be able to follow whatever counter-melody is being played. Some of the early-pressings that are highly recommended on this forum have so little bass response (probably because they are flat transfers) that my Sennheiser HD650s (notoriously bassy) can hardly pick it up... UNACCEPTABLE~!

TJT doesn't necessarily fall into this category, but it's one reason I like the MFSL more at this moment. Still not going to get rid of the JFP, though...

a lot of this preference is related to sound system....Dave has a genuine high end system....listening on headphones (even great ones) or in the car or on a low-fi system will yield dramatically different results....

this is an interesting thread for me, because I bought my first cd player in '87 right around the time JT first came out, but I never cared for the sound of it, especially when I compared it with other titles that came out that year (Sting's "Nothing Like the Sun", George Michael's "Faith", Def Lep's "Hysteria", and some others that all seemed to have more punch and more clarity). So I was waiting almost 20 years for them to fix this album if you will.

Granted, I never bought the vinyl or the MFSL and I regret both of those misses, so I guess I can tolerate the loudness and smiley face EQ in light of the lifeless and dull original recording to my ears.

Could you tell me what the sound difference is - to you on your system - between the MFSL and P35D?

I need the bass too - and am turned off by many early pressings that, no matter how smooth and "natural" still lack the punch and warm bass vinyl versions deliver.

But this is a very system dependent issue - and even though your Senn's are no doubt great 'phones, I suspect you're missing some of the bass that is present on the P35D. But I will recheck this evening.

So maybe someone can post some lossless files of the MFSL as well?
