I listened to Patricia Barber's Modern Cool HDCD in a friend's house last night and was impressed with the quality of this record. Looking for it this morning I found two digital versions of it, one on regular CD (Koch Records) and the other on HDCD (Premonition Records, remastered).

Which one do you think sounds better?

    Thanks,
    Demetrio.

Have her other albums been remastered in HDCD as well?

I'm thinking of A Distortion Of Love especially.

I had the Gold HDCD version of Cafe' Blue and it sounded very good. I compared it to the SACD and the SQ was very close. I agree that the asking prices of the MFSL SACDs are insane . If you have a Bluray player you could buy PB's Modern Cool BR. I have it and it sounds outstanding. Here is a link to importcds and it appears they have all the Gold HDCDs in stock.

If you really like PB's music why not spend the extra cash and get the Gold HDCDs. The CDs I have of PB sound very good but I found the one Gold HDCD I had sounded excellent.

    Thanks for your reply. :righton:

I'm sorry, I can't help you. I love the SACDs, but I now have the Blu Ray's.

The MFSL SACDs are hybrids and will play on a regular CD player as well. The CD layer of Modern Cool (also) sounds excellent, so IMO you should definitely consider the MFSL (if you can find it for a reasonable price). :)

No, just the one. I sold my Modern Cool SACD a few months ago to a forum member for about $80, so I was able to pick up the Blu Ray Audio disc for cheap. I still have the SACD of Cafe Blue.

If you really like digital, you should really consider moving into a high resolution format. Your post indicated that you only found "two digital versions" when in fact SACD and Blu Ray are both digital. If you dig this kind of music, high rez digital really brings a lot to the table. (Just saying.)

Get the HDCD's if you have a suitable player. They all sound good. Cafe Blue, Modern Cool, Nightclub and Companion

I believe the OP has mentioned that he does not have an SACD or Bluray player. The SACDs are outstanding and I was lucky to buy them all at very fair prices. I gave up on Cafe' Blue until a fellow SH member offered it to me for a very fair price. I really appreciated that he did that and have taken a whole new mindset on when I sell any music. That is to offer it at fair prices or for what I paid for a specific title no matter what I could get. There is no way I'm selling my Modern Cool SACD even though I also have the Bluray ;).

Bill, I understood the OPs remarks about doing redbook only. My intent was to try to sell him on the idea of upgradeing to high resolution digital to enhance his audio experience.

Get them both (as low as $29.89 on Amazon) and report back here

If you are that sensitive to the differences on redbook CDs you need to upgrade to a SACD/Blu-ray player.

I would never hesitate to obtain a SACD within reason.
Otherwise, I'd settle for 5.1 surround Blu-ray audio over a RBCD any day.

And if you think this one is expensive on SACD, look up Cafe Blue!

Really? Perhaps I should give the HDCDs another try. I used to have the Gold HDCD of Cafe' Blue. The sound wasn't very good being strident and the redbook layer on the MFSL SACD easily bettered it.

I did a comparison awhile back of the Cafe' Blue Gold HDCD and the SACD. I thought the Gold HDCD compared quite well to the SACD layer. I think the Gold HDCDs are the better choice cost wise over the SACDs. One could pay $400 or more for the five PB SACDs. I think the SQ of the Gold HDCDs is very close for quite a bit less.
