Actually, I was being facetious saying the following made sense, because it doesn't:
"If I go back to cassette I prefer going back to reel then."
Clearly, if you prefer going to reel, you're not going back to cassette.

But, I can understand your choice as you recounted it. RTR was always expensive and fiddle-intensive.

It's hard to beat tapes made on a Willy Hermanerized Dragon. The tapes made on the Dragon are better (warmer) than the CR7A.

I have a Nakamichi CR-7A. Listening to it right now -- a type IV metal dub of a UK Decca mono copy of Aftermath and it so close to the record. Even as good as my 24/192 digital dubs are, they are immediately recognisable as digital. I just brought up my digital dub to do a minute or two of comparison and while the 24/192 is good, I prefer the metal cassette. It's just more pleasing to the ear, for whatever reason. And no, I don't need any regurgitation of the talking points on 'proof' as to why I should prefer the digital. In this case, my perceptions are the only proof I need, especially since it's my own time and money involved.

He overhauled it. Although he did a great job, my dream is to have ESL overhaul both of my decks.

And ESL is? I'm assuming it's not short for English as a Second Language...which is what I get Googling it...

Onkyo TA-2026, black version. I had one new in the 80's. Picked up a clean, working one a couple of years ago for nostalgia.

I have a Pioneer CT-F1000 I recently acquired from the original owner. I had one I bought while stationed in Spain in the 80s so this was a nostalgic trip for me. I changed all the belts, had the clutch assy rebuilt, cleaned all pots, switches and Molex connectors. Power Supply voltages were correct so I just closed it up and started using it.

    I have four -

JVC TDX301 Sounds awesome but the mechanisms are a bit noisy.
JVC KD-D50 Sounds OK but has a lot of features and good eye candy.
Nakamichi Cassette Deck Two. I use this when recording. It is the only one I trust to sound near perfect when recording mixed tapes (Using TDK or Maxell of course) got it for $8 at thrift.
Sanyo RD 10. Sounds good, is in excellent shape inside and out but is not hooked to my system. For $7, I could not resist. especially the wood grain casing and vintage appeal. It just isn't "robust" enough for what I like for daily use.

Used to own a Pioneer CT-W900R but it had had calibration problems that would not stay resolved, plus would reverse unexpectedly from time to time. I gave that deck away.
Kind of sucks though cause it had a features list similar to Hail Vinyl's TD-W805TN. It just wouldn't behave.

There is NO question that a Nak sounds good. I mean, we are talking NAKAMICHI. None is better. If i had to choose but one deck, it would be my Nak.

Might I ask, good folks, how does a Marantz stack up to Nak? Marantz gear is no joke. Never had the pleasure of owning one of their cassette decks so I am curious.

Ahh yes, JVC. Cannot go wrong. That deck is sexy! I thought porn images were not allowed here.

Aiwa AD-F850; a three-head budget giant killer back in the day! Still going strong and sounding surprisingly good many years later on only a single belt replacement from new.
