I had a Sony player on order back in 1985 so I went out and bought Springsteen's
"Live '75-'85" 4 cd box set. Had to wait about a week for the player to arrive which tried my patience to no end. That year Bruce was about the hottest act in Rock and I played that set many times for about the next two months.

I used to DJ back in the 70's and 80's and out of the hundreds of people I knew, I was the first to get a cd player....about the middle of 1983. The first cd I bought was Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. It was a W. German pressing and I thought it sounded pretty cool. I got the doors first album shortly thereafter, and we did an A/B comparison with the MFSL vinyl...the vinyl blew the cd away, and boy was I pissed!
Oh, and the first cd player I got was a Technics that retailed @ $1000, got it on sale for $600...the demo clerk drilled a hole in the first Cars album on cd, threw it on the ground and grinded it into the carpet, then played it to show me how 'indestructable' they were LOL.
I rarely buy cds now unless I can't find a superior vinyl pressing or DVD-A and it has music i just gotta have:)
I never warmed up to cd sound tho I think some actually do sound better than their vinyl counterparts....however, I find a sterility and hardness in the sound which I don't find in vinyl or even tape format (tho you can keep cassettes, they're only good for the car IMO.) 8-tracks and open reels, baby!

That's easy Billy Joel's Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2. Sometime in early 1985. The same day I got my Sony D5 "portable" player. (The portable part aka battery pack was sold separtly and I never found one.) The functions are you can skip and scan tracks !!!
The player still works fine and I still use it sometimes.

The year was 1989 and I was a sophmore in high school. Ordered a Sony player from Crutchfield earlier in the week and was anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I remember being very careful in my selection of these two titles. I was not dissapointed and still return to them often with a strange affection and fondness.

My first CD was The Beatles "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." I bought it and my CD player the same day.

WOW! That's also the first CD player that I had! We never purchased the battery pack and just ran it off of AC. Those players were built like tanks! Nice to know that yours is still in operation.

I bought "The Alarm - Declaration", also because it was DDD. Almost gave up on the format right then, but the next week I sprung for the the German Hot Rocks 1 and 2 discs. Hopefully those may now become redundant.

My best friend gave me my first CD: She's the Boss by Mick Jagger, for Christmas in 1985. Went and bought my first CD player about a month later. The first CD I bought with my own money was a German import of Making Movies by Dire Straits. I thought it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard.

Over 10,000 CDs later, I like to kid my best friend--"See what you started?!?!":p

My first was Jimi Hendrix Experience "At Winterland" on Ryko sometime in 85' or '86.
The player was a portable Sony D10.

I bought my first CD in 1985. It was Supertramp "Brother Where You Bound", only a few days later I bought Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms".
My first CD player was a Philips CD 304 which I bought from a friend who had won it as a prize and didn´t know what to do with a CD player. I still paid a lot of money, in particular when one takes into account that I still went to school then.

Hey, fellow music lovers! This is my first post--poppin' the old you-know-what.

I believe my first CD was the Beatles' A Hard Day's Night, though I'm not 100 percent certain. For sure my first box was Eric Clapton's "Crossroads," but I don't have it anymore. I don't know how so many of you can remember for sure something you did 15 years ago or more. I must be in the presence of geniuses!

    Uncle Aaaaaalllll,

Whenever you feel that those old German Stones cd's are redundantly taking up too much space in your life.......PM me! As long as they're the first edition with the red "digitally remastered" banner in the top left hand corner, I can give them a very nice home to lead the rest of their redundant days in peace, not to be replaced by the latest "remastering craze".:D ;)

I don't have the German "Hot Rocks" CD you're all talking about, but just out of curiosity is that the one that had "Satisfaction" in stereo? I remember ICE and other publications raving about that in the late80s/early 90s.

New Year's Eve, 1984, my senior year of high school:

    Big Country: "The Crossing"
    The Kinks: "State of Confusion"
    Prince: "Purple Rain"

I still own two of the three; I later replaced "The Crossing" with a remastered version (which I got for the bonus tracks mainly), but I've never seen any reason to repurchase the other two. Bought my first player - a very crappy Sanyo - on 1/2/85. $250 for that piece of crap - how times have changed!

I know you said "first"...so here's my first TWO!

Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms (Yes, the DDD aspect lured me in!)

20 Party Classics/Rock 'N' Roll Classics In Digital (underwhelming sound to say the least)

Both have the old "FROSTY" top and bottom CD case (later ones have ribbed edges). Remember these babys???

My first cd was the Doors self titled first album. I didn't even own a cd player yet. A friend of mine was lending me a player and I fiqured I would buy a cd and try it out. About 17 years later and I'm still buying cds though, I have been buying a lot of lps as well.

My first CD purchase? It would have been The Beatles but this was 1986 and there were no Beatle CD's yet (beside the Japanese Abbey Road).
So instead I picked up David Bowie's Fame and Fashion on RCA. I still say this one sucked in the sonics department.

Believe it or not at that time Bowie had more CD titles on the market than any other artist or group.

Yup! I can still recall an article in some now-forgotten (by me, at least) early CD magazine. In 1986, they bitched about how you could get everything from Bowie but not a thing from the Stones or the Beatles! Ironically, the situation was the reverse two years later; Bowie's catalog was out-of-print, whereas everything from the Beatles and the Stones could be found easily...

I think the magazine was called CD or CD Review edited by Wayne Green. They raved about the sound on the Elvis CD's - 'nuff said!
