One of my favorite bridges from the last couple years comes, not coincidentally, in one of my favorite tracks of the past couple years. This song doesn't exactly follow a conventional song structure, so one could argue this isn't a bridge at all as opposed to simply the penultimate section of the track, but it breaks up the build-up to the grand finale in the same way a bridge provides a breather before the final chorus, and so I call it a bridge, by gum! It starts at ~3:41 and goes until ~4:23. Pay attention to how the drummer changes the rhythm shortly before the finale. Impressive stuff.

My favourite bridge in a song is the one in "Heart of Darkness" by Pete Ubu

    Cheers.

From Fleetwood Mac's "Gypsy" (1982), starting at around 1:45, with the lyrics "To the gypsy... That remains... She faces freedom... With a little fear..."

Goose bumps. I used to love Stevie. But I'm getting older too. :)

When I think of great bridges I think of this one -

Genesis - no reply at all. Great vocal from Phil and chords from the man Tony Banks.

I've always loved the bridge in Dead Leaves & the Dirty Ground by the White Stripes. It's so simple, but effective.

    Top-of-mind:

The guitar bridge in The Pretenders' studio version of KID might well be the finest 30-or-so second guitar performance ever waxed....

Maybe not a 'bridge' as such but the 'sail on silver bird' bit from Bridge(!) Over Troubled Water gets me every time... (I'm sure this will have been mentioned already...)

    (Is that a 'bridge'...?)

I was just listening to Springsteen's Girls in their Summer Clothes and was struck by the smart, out-of-left-field bridge that elevates an already excellent song about the redemptive power of love. The bridge not only provides vivid imagery but introduces a little short story element that allows the audience to create along with the artist. Good stuff.

    Frankie's Diner's
Over on the edge of town
    Neon sign spinnin' round
Like a cross over the lost and found

    Fluorescent lights
    Flicker above Bob's Grill
Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks "fill?"
And says "penny for your thoughts now my poor Bill"

  19. Pop songs often connect the verse and chorus via a bridge, which as its name suggests, is a section that connects the verse and chorus at one or more points in the song. The verse and chorus are usually repeated throughout a song though the bridge, intro, and coda (also called an "outro") are usually only used once.

I believe that qualifies and it does elevate an already great song to the next level.

:righton: This was my vote as well. I searched the thread to see if anyone else had mentioned it. I just mentioned how much I love the bridge of this song in my alternative charts thread.

Goosebumps every time. It lifts the song so perfectly.

Oh, Caroline you / break my heart, I want to go and cry in The Beach Boys’ Caroline No is the most beautiful bridge I’ve ever heard. The verse melody is good but that bridge is heartbreaking.
