Not sure how effective career suicide is as far as revenge attempts go.

Queen - Death on Two Legs.

Freddie wrote this about their ex-manager - even dedidcating it in concert with the pleasant "this next song was written about a really dirty old man, I mean a real nasty, creepy mother****er, as you call them.".

Sweet revenge, right? But the greatest revenge bit is that after the song came out, Queen lost a defamation action and had to pay a settlement.

but even so. not sure that's the best revenge given that megadeth never reached the successes that metallica had. one could argue he got to make his own mark in the music world, but mustaine himself has compared his successes to theirs in a negative way.

Didn't hurt his career at all. He remained the same cult artist he always was.

"Yeah, I took her to the movies a few times. You could say I was on the receiving end."

    Nope, not good revenge.

The Dixie Chicks won a bunch of Grammy awards

It included the single "Not Ready To Make Nice"

But their career, as it was, was still sunk. I'm not sure that really counts as revenge, given the damage that was done to them.

It kind of did. Reed likely did not care, but it certainly hurt his career. His solo releases before Machine

    • Sally Can't Dance, peaked at no1o in the US
    • Rock'n Roll Animal, Gold in the US
    • Berlin Silver in the UK
    • Transformer, 29 in the US (his second highest peak), Platinum in the UK
After Metal Machine he'd only go onto have two more albums reach the US top 40 in the next 40 years.

I always find that story a bit strange, considering Radio Gaga and I Want To Break Free went to number in numerous countries in 1984, and The Works sold well too, they had a successful world tour, and that they headlined Rock In Rio in 1985 only a few months before Live Aid.
That said, Live Aid was another up yours to the critics.

Agreed, although they had a lot of criticism in the works era for playing Sun City. Also around that time Freddie tried for a solo career which wasn't successful so it maybe that live aid gave them the chance to rebuild friendships and show the world they were still relevant.

I think the Sun City malarkey was more of an issue in the critics world than to the average music listener.
It's a shame, as the Mr Bad Guy album didn't get much backing from the label. The songs weren't bad. Some were quite catchy. When re-released / remixed years later Living On My Own and I Was Born To Love You were huge hits.

And best of all, having the "revenge" song on the blockbuster album. Queen's Death On Two Legs is the ultimate.

For classical buffs: not exactly revenge, but a wonderful world-class 'eff yoo':

In 1906, the composer Max Reger premiered his Sinfionetta in A Minor, Opus 90. A critic, Rudolf Louis, wrote a very negative review. Reger responded:

""I am sitting in the smallest room of my house. I have your review before me. In a moment it will be behind me."
