fantastic look at a part of music not really seen in depth. amazing so many are from the same area-near me. streaming on Kanopy now.
I'm listening to Mel's autobiography right now, read by himself, called All About Me! My Extraordinary Life In Show Business. Very enjoyable.
Starting to watch The Green Planet on PBS: Search Results | PBS The first episode just aired, with more to follow. The formula has been tried and proven: combine the superb (and timelapse) photography of BCC Nature with narration by David Attenborough.
The Hidden Lives of Pets on Netflix. Utterly fascinating. I just wish it contained more than 4 episodes.
Malcolm Gladwell has an episode devoted to the evolution of the song. Hallelujah | Revisionist History
Just watched the first episode of Light & Magic, Lawrence Kasdan's 5-hour documentary on the history of (arguably) the greatest visual effects company in the world: It's a lot of fun and some of the early 1975 archival footage they managed to locate is really eye-opening. That was an amazing company, and I think few people understand just how much ILM (and Lucas) changed everything in movies in the last forty years.
Watched mur murs on TCM app the other night. It's a French doc about the LA street graffiti and mural scene circa 1980. Reminded me a bit of early Errol Morris.
Not sure if this is the last one I watched or not and I can’t remember, for the life of me, where I watched it: Stories We Tell (2012) Directed by Sarah Polley. That’s funny, I was just looking into getting a violin bow fixed this afternoon. Talking with the repair person, I learned that it’s called rehairing. I’ve only got 3 days to use six kanopy credits so I’ll probably see what it’s about.
Werner Herzog's THE FIRE WITHIN: A REQUIEM FOR KATIA AND MAURICE KRAFFT. In much the same way Herzog took Timothy Treadwell's nature footage and constructed GRIZZLY MAN, Werner takes the volcano footage of vulcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft to craft a hypnotic document of the obsession that ultimately took their lives. This is essential Herzog and reminds me of his early documentaries, especially in his use of classical music to accompany the mesmerizing visuals. One of the world's visionary filmmakers still making vital, important art. The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft (2022) - IMDb
we went to a showing of Fire Of Love which is a new documentary about the Krafft's and using their footage. very interesting and well done. not directed by Herzog. We had seen Into The Inferno by Herzog in about '17 which included some details on the pair. now he has another doc focusing on them? gets a bit confusing. where did you watch this?
Another from the past several months I can’t remember how I watched it: Finding Vivian Maier (2013) A documentary on the late Vivian Maier, a nanny whose previously unknown cache of 100,000 photographs earned her a posthumous reputation as one of the most accomplished street photographers.
