Serious Intentions -William Clarke I met William at the Hollywood Blues Festival in the John Ford Center on a hot day in the early 1980's. Him and his wife were selling lp's out of the back of his car. I'd never heard him play before and he just blew me away. What a great harmonica player, song writer, and singer. He was a very nice man, generous with other musicians especially younger up and coming harp players. It was a sad day when I heard about him dying in a bathroom from a bleeding ulcer. He was still a young man. For some reason I've been playing all his albums this week, I still miss seeing hime play. Hope you like him and if he's new to you, all his albums are great, I put this one up because I'm playing it right now.
Today you get a 2fer, I think LIVE AT THE REGAL has already been mentioned? But I'll put these two as an equal title. Too hard to pick 1 over the other for me:
I recently asked Ace records if the complete Bernie Besman recordings (1948-1952) by John Lee Hooker was a possible future release. Here is what they responded: Hello One of our blues specialist is about to do an analysis of the Hooker tapes we have. This will take several months and we will then decide what projects we can undertake. Don't hold your breath! Regards Phil Stoker
I've come across these every once in a while and I've always wondered what they were. Could you say something about SQ? Are the booklets any good? Thanks!
Love William Clarke! A friend of mine who plays harp put me on to William Clarke about 10 years ago. Man what a player and singer! Nobody really sounds like him and I do go through stages where I listen to quite a bit of his music. So sad to have lost him at such a young age.
These are the first 2 blues albums I bought, way back in the 70's. They're still very precious to me. _ Muddy Waters - After The Rain _ Johnny Winter - Johnny Winter
The sound is good. Most disc are studio and some are from concerts. I wasn't disappointed with any of them. You can look them up on discogs and it will give you the lowdown on the recordings and the booklets are really nice. I have the first 48 and the 2 Christmas issues. http://www.discogs.com/lists/The-Blues-Collection/25834
Picked these up tonight. The Lightnin'Hopkins is the reissue on ACE and the Blues Collection is from 1977 I found sealed in the used bins for $7. Anyone know the history on the Blues Collection LP. I can't really find any info on it. I bought it because Johnny Otis is on it and he produced it.
I went through a Blues phase in the late 90's. Tab Benoit, Walter Trout, Gary Moore, Coco Montoya, Susan Tedeschi, Jonny Lang, SRV, Rod Piazza, Indigenous, Chris Duarte, Ian Moore, the list goes on and on... I saw a lot of big name shows. I still dig the Blues, but I've had a harder time finding new Blues that I find interesting. I tend to like Slow Blues with long guitar solos. A couple of years ago, I found Mike Zito's Pearl River album and it re-kindled the fire, but still haven't found a lot of new stuff that keeps my attention. I buy a lot of music so I've tried the regular suspects. I'm looking for more stuff like this:
