I forgot to mention Rainman, which is really good. Dustin Hoffman gets all of the love, for good reason, but Cruise actually gives a good performance in that one.
Without a doubt, Collateral. The only movie where you forget it's Tom Cruise. Jamie Foxx also does a stand out performance .
Live Die Repeat is excellent, helped by having Emily Blunt in it in great form. I prefer him in sci-fi stuff, some great ones like Minority Report, Oblivion and Vanilla Sky, but Magnolia is also excellent. I found American Made one of his weaker films.
Minority Report. He gives a terrific performance as the tortured lead. I’d add Edge of Tomorrow and Oblivion. The guy has a flair for picking terrific science fiction projects.he was also very good in War of the Worlds.
Yes, the first one. Directed by the great Brian De Palma. The second one is solid but super confusing.
Magnolia Eyes Wide Shut Interview With A Vampire Born On The Fourth Of July Mission Impossible A Few Good Men The Firm Collateral Vanilla Sky Minority Report
Favourite TC film? Eyes Wide Shut (seriously). Love the strangeness of it all, the surreal moments (the two visit to the costume shop, Alan Cummings’ concierge), the disturbing (the unmasking) and the dreamlike (the entire film). Both Tom & Nicole are wonderful, the entire supporting cast sell their characters completely (Sidney Pollack’s Ziegler, Todd Field’s Nick Nightingale). Along with 2001, my favourite Kubrick and easily my favourite TC film. In joint second place are the last three MI films, with particular nod to Ghost Protocol. In these Tom has come the closest any western star has come to the jaw dropping stunt work of Jackie Chan/Yuen Biao/Sammo Hung. It helps that TC deploys the charisma that sold Top Gun et al to maximum effect, are beautifully shot and have plots that work well enough for their respective films to bind everything together. Coming in third is Edge of Tomorrow. One of the very best sci-f- action films of the past couple of decades, with enough intelligence about it to stand up to multiple viewings. I’ve very fond memories of Top Gun, Cocktail and the like from back in the day, but Tom’s best work has easily been since the late 9os to today. For someone who has acted, performed THOSE stunts, produced and worked with both Spielberg and Kubrick, there is an incredible interview or autobiography to be had if he, well, ever finds himself able to speak freely.
No one liked Legend? I know it gets a bad rap but I enjoyed it, especially as a youngster watching with my cousins.
