In Canada we call a Zee a Zed! Colour is spelled with a u, and the colour Grey is not Gray!

Carry on Macca. (I'm quite sure it was John who called him Macca, but I wasn't there, so I reeeally don't know).

He would have got it way before that - in primary school - as Nik said up thread it was normal and common to have a nickname made out of your surname.

In England (and Australia and I dare say Canada) in the 50's no child at school was ever addressed by their first name by the teachers - it was always the surname.

If you brother went to the same school at the same time he would be say McCartney minor.

It was very formal so the nickname thing was how your mates addressed you - still you surname but with a modicum of affection added in :)

I must say that I was rather surprised to see his official merchandise at the recent Hamilton
    concert with `Macca' on them.

  5. Well, I'm in my second childhood, so I call him "Macca" and "Paulie" and "Cutie". But I've named my pillow "Paul McCartney", out of respect.

I only ever refer to Macca as Sir James Paul McCartney Esq. Even when I'm using him as a pillow. Which I do. A lot.

Somewhere on Anthology 2 McCartney is showing the other Beatles how to play a song and Lennon calls him Macca.

I always call him Paul McCartney. I feel weird even thinking about "Macca". The same reason I could never bring myself to call Morrissey "Moz" or Harry Chapin "Dad".

We do the same in Australia - John Newcomb is "Newk". Paul Hogan is "Hoges" Anyone with the last name of Robertson or Robinson is universally known as "Robbo"!

The Macca thing doesn't bother me so much, but I do find middle-aged men who call The Beatles "The Fabs" cringeworthy.

Why on earth shoukd we not call Macca Macca . That s strange. He s been named that ever since schooldays-common Liverpool way of nicknaming.
Why in eart does grown men discuss these things?
Why in earth do I discuss thibgs like this?
    Weird.
