, to signify someone was doing something people in the room were offended by?
    TV or movie?
I figured if anybody knew, it would be the geniuses that hang out here!

I think it was Monty Python's Previous Record - Album opener - Not This Record! Signifying abject terror. They made such great, sonically interesting comedy records, right up there with the Lampoon and Firesign. I used to listen to that stuff all the time as a kid - no wonder I love Negativland.

Not sure if that was first though. I am sure someone did it in the experimental 60's too. Interesting question...

Now I have Skratz Skratz Dirty Fingernails playing in my head....

i know you guys went 'on records', but, I deliberately asked this in the 'Visual Arts' thread to see when it happened on film.

    So, this must be a 21st Century 'thing';
I checked the 'every-lizard-stops-and-looks-up' scene from "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas" (@2:30), and expected to hear it..., but I did not!

Am I the only one completely clueless about the meaning of the question? You mean the sound of a record skipping?
At first I thought this was about how rappers used to to weird stuff with records back in the day.

I think he means the sound of the needle being dragged across the record, like this: (at 3:20)

Ah, that makes sense! I have heard that sound in films and TV shows now that I think of it.

Much, much earlier than any of the above mentioned.

I think it was "South Park" that actually had a guy with a record-player on hand to make that sound when something that made you go, "WhaaaaaT?" happened.

Frank Zappa used it on Only In It For The Money to transition from surf music to the Mothers.

That was not the one I was referring to , there is an earlier one on the first couple of records...
Might have "STOP THIS RECORD STOP THIS RECORD", but I am not sure THAT is where the scratch is, might be in another place, I am pretty sure there is one though...

That's definitely the iconic Python record scratch, but surely not the first ever!

There is a record skip on "Another Monty Python Record" at the very end of side one
"Im sorry squire, I scratched the record "

But I think there is another one somewhere in those first two or so albums..

    Ok......
While not REALLY an example of what I'm talking about.... the scratch heard HERE might give you all an understanding of what I'm talking about (@0:18)

Side two opens with "Are you Mary Queen of Scotts"
    "I am "

    Oh dear the radio's exploded
Well what is on the television then ?
    Looks like a penguin...

It isn't just the writing.... totally absurd...but the performance....
I have had girlfriends that could NOT understand Monty Python at all....reminds me of people that cannot clap their hands in rhythm to music...
I always assumed most of it was lack of exposure....

    Later on the album

"Have you got all the stuffing up one end ?"
Monty Python at the top of their game...

Michael Palin ALWAYS cracks me up....

a bit off topic....please forgive me for I have sinned...

As long as you understand what I'm trying to discover...
Heck, I've even typed "Using 'record-scratch' to signify something embarrassing had been done" on YouTube, and I got NOTHING!

I am PRETTY certain there is one on the early Monty Python records, like the TV shows, hard to find, since the skits just flow in and out.
I bet someone on here knows where it is....

I seem to remember an EF Hutton ad at a dinner party
"My broker is EF Hutton, and EF Hutton says...." at which point everything comes to a screeching halt. But that would be in the 70s and it was already a trope by then.

That's along the lines of that "Please pass the jelly!" guy from that Polaner All Fruit commercial.

For records I have a feeling it could have been a Stan Freberg something or other record, mid-1950s.
For movies or TV, an early one just flashed into my mind and flashed right out again
