Yeah, I wasn't counting the comps of previously released material [Red, Blue, R&R, Ballads, Past Masters, 1, etc..]or live albums [Star Club] per the original post.

Prince is indeed up there as well,
    -1999
    -Sign O the Times
    -Graffiti Bridge
    -Emancipation [triple]

I had forgotten about how prolific Frank Zappa was though!

How many doubles did Yes put out?

  5. Miles Davis had nine. Zappa had 23.

Ayreon Had five. Joan Baez had five. Black crows had five. Jacques Brel Had eight. John Coltrane had 15.

i believe they defined it as the maximum amount that 1 CD could hold so around 80 minutes.

  6. Not really about creativity, more about provenance for the sake of this discussion.

John Coltrane never released a double album.

Only one studio album in the vinyl years. More recent ones are a muddle though: Union (60-plus minutes) was a single LP, while Heaven & Earh (under 50 mins) was released as a double.

+ Chicago Live in Japan (C 5.5) which was a double album as well (albeit only released in Japan)

Yo La Tengo is similar with the vinyl release typically being a double disc, although lately they've been trimming down their albums to fit on a single vinyl disc. Affordability I suppose.

I imagine most of the Bevis Frond's CDs would translate into double LPs, which would be a bunch.

  12. Muslimgauze come in at about 14 doubles.

So did The Clash. That doesn't mean it's good.

Riot Going On was a double LP, only running about an hour. Sounds great though.

I don't think he had one during his lifetime. Posthumously, there were various live albums, archival collections and repackages of his music that were double albums.
