I bought the 1994 remastered CD of Dark Side of the Moon and hated the sound. The heart beat that opens the record was beating into a bed of digital silence, you could hear the noise gate opening and closing.I know their CDs have been remastered since then, I think in 1997. Are these or the original CD issues any better? I'm sure the MFSL discs are good, but I don't have $100 lying around for one off ebay just now... Thanks

    Douglas,
I don't know about the reissues but as far as the MFSL's go if you're going to spend your hard earned money on a copy MAKE SURE you get the Ultradisc1 version made in Japan as opposed to the Ultradisc2 made in USA. The UD2 version sucks and really pales in comparison to the UD1 sonically. ;)

AFAIK, all versions of DSOTM currently available use the same remastering as the 1992 20th Anniversary reissue, up to and including the version on the Shine on box set, the subsequent EMI and Capitol reissues, and the recent Japanese mini sleeve version. Anyone knows otherwise?

    Ah - my favorite album...

The MOFI Gold CD is great - as far as the different versions go,to be honest I've owned both many times (sold quite a few on eBay)and I can't tell the difference in sonics between an Ultradisc I or II - and I don't think anyone else can either...

The best sounding version though is the MOFI vinyl...fetches about $50 on eBay, same for the CD...(not $100)

    Best,

    Ben

I just sold a copy in Auction for America (read: charity) and got $37 for it. It was sort of VG+, to use LP rating nomenclature. YMMV.

    Ben,
Just because you don't hear a difference doesn't necesarilly mean that there isn't one. If you doubt what I say just check out any album that Steve has done compared to anyone elses version. I've heard your statement before and all I can say is if you don't hear a difference between UD1 and UD2 then perhaps your system is not as revealing as it should be and maybe time for an upgrade or two.I've had non-audiophile friends comment on the difference. There are a lot of us who feel the same way about this issue. So I guess you have to ask yourself if the statement I've just made is true or are there a lot of audiophile liars out there. [IMG]

Ben, Dave is right on this one: Dark Side UD1 (or simply "Ultradisc") is an awful lot better than the UD2. I've heard it on three systems so far: Dave's, Eric's (another friend) and - of course - my own. Eric's sytem is interesting - he is running an old Hitachi receiver with Tangent speakers right now as he is getting stuff repaired. My point is you don't have to spend the Big Bucks for something good - just take a good test disk or two that you know well and go "listening shopping". It may take some time but one day you'll hear a big difference somewhere!

Although the biggest difference I've ever heard was comparing Band on the Run - stock and DCC. Wow...... :)

For the 48th time: Thank you Steve!

Hmmm...will give it another listen. I definitely don't doubt your veracity, Dave - please don't take it that way...'kay?

Am planning to upgrade my CD player soon, though...looking at a Rega Jupiter right now...it does sounds sooooo good. Matter of fact, I'll bring my DSOTM Gold CD to give it another spin around the parking lot...

    Best to the Board!

    Seriously Ben,
No offence here as we all learn from each other. You may want to check out Sonys XA-20 ES as this is what I use (20 bit dac) and only recently, like yesterday, I found out that it's their top of the line and most of the time a bit cheaper than the Rega Jupiter.
If you don't mind me asking what are you running for a system? Let's go to email so we can talk about it with out wasting Forum space, if you want. Email me my address is here. [IMG]

Ben, I am sorta considering upgrading - or really, adding to an existing system - a better CD player. But I am not jumping in any direction until I see some new DCC stock. If they decide to go with SACD (which appears to be so!), I'll start checking out quality SACD players. If it's DVD-A, I'll check out DVD-A players.

If I were you I'd hunt around, listen, but hold off on purchasing anything just yet.... after all, your existing CD player works, right? :)

    Just a thought.....!!!

Does ANYONE know how the recent Japanese mini-lp versions figure into this...or don't they ?

    Thanks !

Unfortunately the recent Japanese mini-LP style CDs are (sonically) exactly the same as the North American domestic releases. Don't bother getting them. Very disappointing.

However it's pretty cool packaging - but as I've said before, you can't play the packaging!

    :(
