Carl Wilson's dog actually. Hence the Beach Boys flavour.

A song that gets me welling up is "Lucy" from The Hollies "Another Night"...tale of a family man who is told by the doctor that his wife is dying.

The Little Blue Man by Betty Johnston, one of the saddest songs of all time, makes me laugh and cry at the same time. :)

Seriously, I couldn't enjoy listening to any Carpenters' songs for many years following Karen's death. She was just too dang young...

    That one gets me too.

But here's the one that has never failed to get me choked up, no matter how many times I've played it:

Grant Hart "You Don't Have To Tell Me Now"

Forgot about that one - good pick. The song's lyrics are sad enough, but the way Tilbrook sings the lines "I'd beg for some forgiveness/but begging's not my business" speaks volumes about macho vulnerability, not a real common topic in rock songs.

Here's a vote for "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times." Talk about getting to the heart of the matter: "Sometimes I feel very sad." The plainspokenness of it is almost hard to listen to.

Steely Dan's "Any World (I'm Welcome to)" can also get to me. There aren't many more exquisite songs about utter despair.

"Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" by Elton John. But there's a story behind it. I was at the Elton concert in 1974 at Madison Square Garden that John Lennon made an appearance at. After singing I Saw Her Standing There, Lennon left the stage. Elton immediately went into Don't Let The Sun... and the entire arena was lit up with cigarette lighters. It was one of the most emotional moments I've ever witnessed at a concert. It was a powerful performance, and coming after the delirium of John's appearance, with the arena all lit up like that, I just about lost it. I still tear up when I hear this song.

I just remembered another one..."Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)" by Don McLean. Like the earlier songs I mentioned, if I sing it I'll pretty much definitely get choked up, but listening is often enough. The part that always gets me is:

"For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
    On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
    As beautiful as you."

Gets me everytime for some reason...

Sunny Came Home - Shawn Colvin
    Real Love - The Beatles
Lake Marie - John Prine (great story)
Lonely You - Badfinger (Pete's smooth Welsh voice is a killer)

Back in high school, it was Prince's "Beautiful Ones" from Purple Rain.
More recently, and for completely different reasons, Everything But the Girl's "The Night I Heard Caruso Sing" from Idlewild.

My father passed away shortly after that song came out, and I too cannot hear it today without thinking of him and crying(a little).

I've mentioned this before but there was a Canadian group in the 60's/70's called McKendree Spring who did a song about a couple breaking up. The couple seems resigned to the fact that breaking up is the best thing, but the singer after listing reasons that it is best says

"But what will we do with the child
Who has your hair, my face, and your eyes
Reminding me that we fell in love for a little while..."

It's called "What Will We Do With The Child?" and it gets me 40 years later.
