Yesterday I picked up Feeding the Monkeys... at a Bullmoose brick and mortar and got the 5 track version, but I was reading some recent Amazon reviews that mention folks getting only the 3 core tracks on the cd. Strange, as 5 tracks are still listed on the cover and on the Amazon page.
Same everything except today at Waterloo in Austin. Got the 5 track version after getting uptight after reading the Amazon version. Has the 3D cover.
I've abandoned the chronological order listening after getting home. Now on disc 5 of the new Zappa in New York release - great stuff on all 5 discs. Reading The Big Note at the same time.
The RSD "Guitar World of Zappa." New to me and I loved it. I'm liking Zappa more and more as the years go by
A boot I pulled offline called Dancin Fool - Live. I think the real date is 1980.05.27 Rotterdam [FM Broadcast]. There was another boot in the same place called Back To School I have not identified yet. 1980 05 24 - The Ahoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands 110 min, FM, A+ Chunga's Revenge, Keep It Greasey, Outside Now, City Of Tiny Lights, Teenage Wind, Bamboozled By Love, Pick Me I'm Clean, Society Pages, I'm A Beautiful Guy, Beauty Knows No Pain, Charlie's Enormous Mouth, Cosmik Debris, You Didn't Try To Call Me, I Ain't Got No Heart, Love Of My Life, You Are What You Is, Easy Meat, Joe's Garage, Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?, Dancin' Fool, Bobby Brown, Ms Pinky, I Don't Wanna Get Drafted, The Illinois Enema Bandit
One more for the RSD Guitar World thing! What specifically do you dislike about FZ:OZ? I read a few good things about it (and the write-up in The Big Note made it sound interesting--more instrumentals than usual iirc?) so I put it in my cart. I haven't bought it yet, though!
The band doesn’t seem to jell very well. Also the band is thin sounding without a second guitar or vibes. Vocally it seems off too, as Nappy seems to be having an off night. Also I can’t say I’m a big fan of estrada’s bass playing. All this said, an off night for Frank’s band is better than most, the recording quality is good and the set list interesting.
The 75/76 band is very bare-bones and not particularly exciting, compared to any other ensemble that Zappa had. And this release in particular relies on audience bootleg fills (mostly) to patch frequent cuts in the recording...something the ZFT never did again.
This release took me ages to get into for all the reasons above + it was very expensive at the time & didn't feel worthy of the price at all. With the passage of time I've grown very fond of it, As stated above, Estrada's Bass playing is a bit sloppy & Nappy's a bit out of sorts & the band isn't as tight as we're used to with FZ, but it does have a charm & FZ plays some mean guitar. Regarding the cut & fills in the tape, this only happens twice & not too intrusive once you get used to it, it's certainly worth getting.
I can't afford the Zappa recordings to 2015 book . . . I'm about to go on a days long Zappa listening orgy, do members know of a webpage or pages I can consult for recording info and etc? Thanks
