Hammersmith Odeon The Zappa In New York reissue is (justifiably) gaining a reputation as The Big One, but Hammersmith leaves nothing to be desired. All these mid-to-late 70s live shows are ridiculously great. Frank out of his mind on guitar. A special time.
I now have everything from Freak Out! to the three Joe's Garage albums. This is my least favorite out of all of them but it is still a great album which just goes to show how amazing Zappa was. 4/5
For the past year or so, I've been working my way chronologically through my Rykodisc collection. Now spinning: 'Have I Offended Someone?'. Can't say that one will ever become a favourite. Next up is 'Mystery Disc', which I'm really looking forward to.
Yeah, I guess. By and large ZFT delivers quality releases. Come to think of it, Baby Snakes is kinda sizzle-y too. I wonder if maybe the Shiek-era live recordings in general are too hot to fix optimally. In any event, I've heard worse. At the risk of throwing up my hands in surrender, the way the industry is going, I'm just glad we get anything at all. But then, I'm 70 years old... "and wretched"...
All day today. This has quickly become my favorite posthumous Frank release. Made a playlist with all the versions on here of Black Napkins, Cruisin' For Burgers, I Promise Not To Come..., and the version of The Torture Never Stops, and it's pure bliss.
I just picked up Make A Jazz Noise Here, so it’s been monopolizing my CD player over the last couple of days. Hot Rats has also been getting some love. My buddy went to see Dweezil a couple of weeks ago which motivated me to give Zappa Plays Zappa a listen as well. Been on a real big Zappa kick recently.
Good for you. I bought it on the day it was released in 1991. It gets my vote for one of the great live albums from anybody.
Hot Rats. Recorded 50 years ago from August through September. What a great album. Spinning the vinyl reissue. Going to see Dweezil and others pay tribute to this record later this month in Edmonton.
