First that came to mind is Daryl Hall, in my opinion one of the most soulful of the "blue-eyed soul" singers. Just listen to how he sings "Sara Smile" or this gorgeous lesser-known song from the early H&O days (Oates sings the verses in a soulful way as well):

Dusty Springfield and Amy Winehouse were the first two I thought of. Obviously, Elvis is a great pick. And man, I really dig these nominations for Gregg Allman.

Its got to be Teena Marie and Van Morrison. They are cut from the same cloth and soooooo talented. Im glad a few people mentioned Teena. The OP asked for the greatest of all time. I dont get how Amy Whinehouse can even be mentioned. No one had had chops like Teena; and Van is probably the best singer songwriter of this era.

Because her one big album is better than most acts' entire careers, combined? Because she completely changed the pop landscape and launched an army of imitators who are still with us today (including arguably the biggest act in the world, Adele)?

You mean Back to Black? Always felt her debut was always overlooked.

Her debut Frank is great too, if not as accessible. That's the record which convinced Adele to pick up a guitar...

Thanks but Adele and Amy cannot compare in talent or singing to Teena Marie. And they are pop music not full throttle blues or rythym and blues. Its all about preference but I dont understand

When I think of soul singers I think of someone whose voice is so rich that they can carry the song regardless of the instrumentation. To that end, Cathal Coughlan (formerly of Microdisney and Fatima Mansions) has always astounded me, especially on "Behind The Moon".
