I feel I have to mention two of my favourites - Janis Ian and Sally Oldfield. Both really great, and both play the piano/keyboards.

Not to overlook Mr. Penniman and Mr. Lewis, but I'll nominate Warren Zevon.

As I understand it, they went down to Rick Hall's place in Muscle Shoals to record Ree's first record for Atlantic because Wex was in love with The Swampers' sound.
When Ree's then-husband/manager saw that the band was all white guys, his teeth got set on edge before a note had been played.
They got "I 'Ain't Never ..." and "Do Right Woman" in the can, so out came the liquor. Things were said and oh, it was ON!
Wex flew The Swampers up north (minus Rick Hall and a trumpeter who "will never work in this town again") and they finished her breakthrough album. As we all know, Ree went on to an illustrious career making many recordings "Anywhere but Muscle Shoals"

Steve Walsh was pretty great in his prime. But for the hall of fame it's Ray Charles, Aretha, and Stevie, and Laura Nyro.

    Ok time to chime in.
I agree with many on Elton, Billy,Nat, Ray and Paul Carrack.
But the thread creator didn't specify Rock so i'm going to deviate a bit and hope i don't get flamed.

Andre Bocelli, Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, Neil Sedaka and Norah Jones.

Not in the thread title but Umbari's opening gambit in post one is:

"Music ain't competition, but who do you think is the greatest keyboardist in rock music?"

A bit off topic, but does anyone have a suggestion for a well researched and well written biography on Nina ??

Yep, he is my answer as well. I think he might be the best rock singer ever (him or Freddie). His prime didn't last long, as he ruined his voice with cigarettes, but in his prime, he was unmatched, IMO.

Since we seem to be including jazz now, I'll go with Nina Simone. Just world-class at both, an actual concert pianist.

Improvising baroque solos. I rest my case.
