You might like The Sophtware Slump, could take a few listens though. It's not massively weird or anything. It just rewards a few plays, like many albums. It's held up as a bit of a classic by many.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs have some great singles, but I find them a bit annoying across a whole album. That's just me though. They were a good punk influenced indie band.

It's a bummer they stopped putting them in cars...I have a cd collection I love for drives as well, but it seems it's Apple CarPlay or nothin these days.

CD players will be around for a long time to come. The whole world has about a zillion billion CDs. There will always be CD players available for decades to come.

In 2030, if you are still worried about it ... buy an 'extra one' and stash it in the closet. NOS.

I intend to keep my 2011 Kia Soul alive as long as possible JUST for the installed cd player. I always drive very old cars so only three years ago did I graduate to a car new enough to HAVE one.

That said, as much as I love it its existence and my believing waaaaay too much in early propaganda about CD eternal indestructibility have had me ruin quite a few of my cds by having them in car.

I’m thinking of buying a CD transport to use with my DAC. The only thing that bothers me is how long will the laser and such be available. I was screwed before by my Sony SCD1 not having a laser mechanism available as it was discontinued so I ended up just giving it away.
I want to invest in a transport but only if I know it’s repairable if necessary.

    That's the big question.

Some manufacturers solve the issue by promising to retain stock of repair parts.

    Others hope to.

    I'd say a Jay's Audio CDT2-MK3 would be a great option.

Well we all know that you should never buy a Sony if you want to be able to have it repaired later, they are cheap and disposable nowadays. You could perhaps buy two or three spares or buy a brand that offers longer term support!

Most of the decent cars have hard-drives at least, I find them very convenient.

    Thats not really true.

The laser assemblies used in many 1990s Sony CD Players were so common you can readily source actual Sony replacements on eBay that work perfectly.

I know this is true about Sony:
I bought a stack of 50 of their CD-Rs and they would not work in my Hhb BurnIt 830 Plus.
Memorex, Maxell, every once in a while a coaster but this whole stack wouldn't work.
I called up Sony, spent 15 minutes going from one automated prompt to the other and at the last one it said because I was not using them in a Sony product they could not help me, good-bye, click.

I was so incensed by the whole aggravating waste of time I will NEVER buy anything Sony ever again so help me God.

It is the stated company policy that they only support their players for (I think it’s 5 years) from release date. If you search the forums here it is a recurring theme!

  14. From PCs to Minidisc and taking in Betamax and Playstations with a Linux OS installed,Sony have a long standing habit of shooting themselves in the foot by inbedded arrogance.
My personal mantra is to avoid any Sony product,Ive found it will cost more in the long run in time, money and junked devices.

My car has a usb port - I ripped a bunch of music files to a portable usb stick and use that in the cars. It also has a cd player but I never use it.

My last Sony CD player lasted around 25 years of near daily use and still works but was starting to skip at the start of discs. Possibly a simple repair. A friend had the same model and only got about two years out of it.

Nearly every new car in EU has usb-port(s), for years. Must be the same in US?!

Ya, we've ditched the cig outlet adapters a while ago and there's usually a USB port in each vehicle these days.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! This is one of the reasons I got back into physical media a couple of years ago. We'd become fairly heavily invested in the Sonos ecosystem, but after one of the Play Fives crapped out and no one could or would fix it I started to question the whole premise. Streaming is great and all, I have Spotify which I mostly use in the car via my iPhone, but ultimately someone else controls what you can access and the file format, bit rate, whatever is controlled by someone else. I still had hundreds of CD's (many older Red Book) in storage, and a hankering to get back to records, and turntables, and stuff that I understand how it works. All I need is an AC power source. You'll take my physical media out of my cold, dead hands, as some guy nearly said a few years back.

Now back on topic-I don't see higher end specialist audio manufacturers discontinuing CD player production any time soon. As some other posters have noted, if you're that worried, by a unit or two now and put them in storage. I have one of these, bought it last year; Cambridge Audio CXC v2 CD Transport

That's what I learned in trade school. That's why you have the high frequency pilot arc to break up the surface layer of oxidation and expose the aluminium below when you weld it. Do I win a prize for most off-topic comment?

I'm in this camp. I will probably buy one more high end SACD/CD player and be done with it. I'm a vinyl first guy, but do like playing my SACD/CD collection. A good new player should last me the duration.

Actually, you are offering good advice, and an alternative solution to losing the ability to playback one's digital library.

For me though, I have a large collection of digital discs. I am not interested in ripping that many discs. It would literally take years. I couldn't stand it. I also like putting in that rare and wonderful sounding disc, feeling and looking at the packaging.

So, my advice is buy a couple of great players now for back up.

True, but now you have to run from a hard drive through playback software, a usb cable into a dac. With a cd player it simplifies the protocol. Though it works, there are differences. The hard drive computer deal has it's short comings too.
