The Steely Dan camp had plans to put Goucho in HiRes soon, but it was put on hold. The biggest joke going around the AudioAsylum forum is, once an SACD of Steely Dan's Goucho gets released, it will be the confirmation that SACD will be a mainstay HiRes format. :)

I'm hoping Steve's in good with people at UNI. I'd love to see Steve as an operative source for SACD mastering for many labels as well as Sam and himself. He's got the tools, the studio, and the tacos! WTF? [IMG]

It would be great if Steve could do some mastering for Universal.
UMG has many fine engineers over there. Steve would be in good
    company.

It says in the booklet for the latest reissue of "Aja" that they cannot find the original master tape reel that has the songs "Black Cow" and "Aja" on it. All they have of those two songs right now are the two track mixdowns. So, until they recover this reel, they cannot remix the whole album for SACD. This is a shame!

I'll betcha dollars to doughnuts that Steve either knows exactly where they are or can find em'!:p I mean after all if he can find Aqualung in Ian Andersons garage...

They can't find the multi-tracks for those two songs, so they could not do multi-channel, but they could still do 2-channel SACD which would be fine by me.

2 CHannel SACD works for me too!

Does that mean the most recent remaster was a re-mix except for those 2 songs?

According to the information as I understand it from reading the liner
notes. The two songs in question were remastered but from the older
master tape not the original session tapes.

The liner notes say that they were looking for the multitracks for a future multichannel project (such as a DTS CD like they did with Gaucho). They had everything they needed for a remastered CD. I think the master tapes were in good enough shape that they did not have to do any remixing from the multitracks for Aja.

I happen to like my MoFi "Aja"- you should check it out. SACD does sound somewhat superior when first recorded in the DSD process but when old material like Miles Davis "Kinda Blue" is redone does not do justice to the process. I am still waiting for comparable material to come out on DVD-A- the last title Foreigner is very uninvolving- maybe the music is dated.

I totally disagree with your SACD reissue statement. Of course, you are welcome to your opinion and people do hear differently, but the 'KOB' that I'm hearing on my system is the definitive version! I still have not grown used to the multi-channel thing yet but the stereo layer can't be topped.

I say the same for many reisues that I've purchased on SACD...'Mingus Ah Um', 'Waltz For Debbie', 'Sketches Of Spain', and the list goes on....

If they record 'Aja' through DSD or put it on DVD-A...as long as it's mastered well it will be much better than the standard releases.

    Ferg -

I have had the same experiences with reissues of older material on SACD.
I think in general Columbia/Sony has not done justice to their reissues on
SACD. I'm sure that TELARC or CHESKY would have done a much better
job. As a matter of fact Sony/Columbia hasn't done a real good job
with reissues in 24 or 20 bit either.

I guess it depends on the Recording studio. I'm sure that Steve could
have gleened much more out of a Kind of Blue reissue on SACD.

Your point is well taken that a direct DSD recording to SACD in theory should give better realism than a Analog to DSD to SACD.

But then again, good sound can be a matter of opinion.

I would bet my last pair of shoes that the KOB tracks on my Mosaic LP set (2nd gen source) have a richer, warmer, truer sound than the SACD version from Sony. That's just been my experience with Sony's reissues, though they generally beat the pants of what the other majors are doing.

    Gary,

I have a few Telarc Cds and I think they are fantastic and really respect the label. When the Rolling Stones come out on SACD is when I think I will jump in and get a player- I am still angry that DVD-A has not gotten off to a good start- yes there are a lot of eclectic titles but I prefer Rock, Jazz, and Blues in that order. If the Sony wants SACD to really succeed they will reissue giants like the Stones or maybe they should launch a new record in SACD first to attract new listeners. I have been reading about the Chesky label over the last couple of years in absolute sound and will probably give that a try.

    Happy listening.

    Mike,

I believe my friend has the same record or something close- I have fought the digital vs analog battle and have lost every time to analog- granted the analog was on a system ranging from a Walker Turntable to Purist Cables- roughly a $100,000.00 retail.

My friend argues that after 15-20 years SACD will sound better than vinyl but by then my ears will be old.

Ferg, DMP and AudioQuest have also released some fine titles on hybrid SACD. Dmp has some wonderful jazz titles, 'Full Circle' Pilhofer Jazz quartet is recommended and AudioQuest has some nice blues, Terry Evans comes to mind and Bruce Katz. The Katz titles are excellent.

I have not heard any of the Telarc SACDS yet but have heard that their blues titles are very good. 'Come On In My House' gets very good reviews.
