Actually, I was mistaken, so I have to retract my comment. It was Resen that I confused with Divisa. I guess I had both of them on the same order at some point so it got mixed up in my head. Yes, both Resen discs I have are copies of the Twilight Time Editions with added Spanish audio.
Thanks for that. Resen is probably Europe’s most notorious pirate DVD and BD distributor, to the point where their name has become a generic term for any pirate release. They are to be avoided like the plague.
Kind of off-topic: the pricing on the various Amazon sites around the world is just odd. For example, many of the Twilight Time titles that are still available new and very inexpensively at Screen Archives (massively discounted) are marked up pretty high on US Amazon. Husbands and Wives being one example...
Many people have no idea Screen Archives exists (and didn't know Twilight Time existed). So some clever sellers buy cheap from Screen Archives and mark up high on Amazon hoping buyers won't know there are other options.
I think that I just achieved full media physicality: a DVD of Deconstructing Harry! I just received the shipping notification. Sigh...feels good! And I just received the Criterion boxed set of Bergman films. Hopefully Woody will get this treatment someday.
That one is a beauty. My favourite film box set ever. I have owned it for nearly two years and I’m still working my way through it. Just watched the television version of Scenes from a Marriage last week.
About 20 years ago, the National Gallery of Art had a Bergman retrospective and I managed to hit many of the films in this box. I'm really looking forward to delving into this set.
For anyone interested, here is where I picked up the Deconstructing Harry dvd...we have a Region Free dvd player, so I didn't research what region this version is. Deconstructing Harry [Priced-down Reissue] Movie DVD
Japan is DVD Region 2. The thing to be careful with this film is the aspect ratio. The first U.K. release was 1.33:1 non-anamorphic, whereas the later reissue is widescreen anamorphic. That is the one I would have recommended to you. I have no idea about the Japanese DVD. Let us know how you get on.
Thanks! According to the website, it's 16: 9. When it arrives, I'll update the group as to aspect ratio.
So, this DVD arrived. Package does indicate this to be 16:9 presentation. And it turns out that this DVD player, which my wife thought was Region Free, is actually a Region Three player...so we a) we couldn't actually watch Harry and b) we will be getting a Region Free Blu-ray player for Christmas. Anyone have any recommendations?
You may be able to make your Region 3 DVD player region-free with a remote control hack. My advice would be to Google the specific model + region-free and see what results come up. It is usually very easy and can be achieved with just a few clicks of the remote. Making a BD player region-free is more complicated and involves a hardware modification. Unless you are an electrical engineer, the easiest way is to buy a region-free player via a specialist third-party seller such as 220 Electronics. They sell via Amazon and also have their own website. I bought my Sony model, via Amazon, about six or seven years ago. It is still going strong and plays anything I put in it.
So, thank you for this advice! I researched the model number online and this thing actually IS a region-free dvd player. It's just incredibly temperamental. For every format that isn't Region 3, it says "wrong region." But when I hit the menu button, it then will play the DVD no matter what region. But I would have just given up without your feedback, so thank you again!
Commonly known as the ‘top menu trick’. This works with some BD players, also, but cannot be relied upon to work with all discs. It depends on how the discs were authored. If I were you, I would do some further research, see if you can change the player settings to Region 0. This should be achievable via a series of remote control commands.
