I was around the same age, and I came to realize that it was a compilation package from a label they were leaving (they had just gone from MCA to Warner Brothers). Which is very common.

And actually for me, it did c0ntain several songs I didn't already have at that time (they'd only been on singles and hadn't ever been on a US LP, I believe) --
    Let's See Action
    Summertime Blues (live)
    The Relay
    Join Together

Later compilations rendered this moot in my collection, but for a while there it was needed.

Following up on a thought mentioned in my previous post,

when an act goes from one label to another, and the new label releases a greatest hits but can't license the original songs, so the artist rerecords those hits for the new label.

Despite the title, this is a shoddy, thrown together compilation and not a live album.

Re: Magic Bue: The Who on Tour:
I think this was released because Tommy was taking longer than expected.
US Decca and the Who has to be close to the strangest record label/recording act pairing ever.

But--- it did have several songs not previously available on US LP, and like Hooligans, was a necessary acquisition for a while (esp. if staying away from imports) until box sets showed up.

Half the tracks were The Beatles…. none of them were George's "cosmic" songs...

    album cover is horrific...

Yes 9012Live. Really? What kind of live album is that? 90125 was their biggest album since who knows when. Why not give us a full live album from the tour? I've never understood the reasoning behind that one.

It did have some hard-to-finds like Let's See Action, though, as I recall. I thought the selections were fairly inspired and it was a solid listen. Would've made a great two-fer with the Kids Are Alright Soundtrack if you wanted an instant Who collection.

But, yeah, if you already had all the songs.... Remember the Join Together UK import? That was essential at that time for filling in gaps.

Yeah, I loved that album when I was a kid...but the repeat tracks from "Happy Jack" and "Sell Out" really are a ripoff.
They could've put on "Substitute", "Dogs", "Heatwave", "In The City", "The Last Time" etc. and it would have been a much better comp.

Not really an idea, just an absurd title for this collection of raggedy home demos with Mike Ephrom who plays a clavecin which ends up sounding like a toy piano.

Completely agree. All those songs existed at that time.

Some of the songs you listed had already appeared on US singles so you'd think they'd have been fair game (e.g., Substitute and (not mentioned by you) I'm a Boy) -- and maybe Dogs? (if so, it was a B-side).

There has to be some secret underground military complex where captured terrorists are tortured and interrogated. If they refuse to reveal the locations and names of their leaders, bases, weapons, etc., the military locks them in a soundproofed chamber and plays this CD.
