I don't think Benoit was ever a full time vocalist before joining Yes, which probably made road life quite difficult. The band he was in and subsequently rejoined after Yes (and left again) Mystery, are very good, but they are also very underground, such as IQ, Jadis, Pendragon, etc. In other words, most of the people in these groups also have full time day jobs. I could be wrong, but I think Benoit has left the music industry for good.

On the Japanese SHM-CD of Drama there are bonus tracks, at least one features Jon on vocals.

Sure, but that doesn't make him essential.

It is more YES than what is going around calling themselves YES today. Tony Levin was awesome on that tour until he broke his hand but Berlin is a great player too.

I can't disagree about the drums however, if its Bruford I will take it!!! It's the best Yes concert I have ever seen. The performances are excellent.

As essential as Squire. Do you mean today? You can call anything you want Yes and go on tour today but the band and the music that made them what they are is because of Anderson.

You can't call it a Yes concert. Some of the musicians performing had been in Yes, but it was just music composed by Yes.

Actually both Trey and Fishman were prog fans. They have both have mentioned being influenced by Genesis and Yes. Do you believe their only influence was the Dead?

will you stop. goodness are you really hung up on a technicality. when Jon Anderson Rick Wakeman Bill Bruford Steve Howe are on stage together they are as much Yes as any other version

Repeating this over and over does not make it any more true for people who don't share your opinion.

It actually reinforces the lack of weight behind the thought.

I am so amazed by people who say that Anderson is not essential (!) to the band... I mean... words fail me at this point.. I mean, what can ya say to a person with such a mindset. Makes me wonder whether people are the fans of a band at all. A person, who gave the band a fully, 1000% unique voice, someone who composed Gates of Delirium and Awaken singlehandedly, someone who wrote half of tales and, most likely, most of Close to the Edge - not friggin' essential!? Jesus... True, Anderson did not write perhaps genius works in the latter part of his career, but he still has his voice - the most prominent and the most easily noticeable element of Yes music. Sorry for ramblin'... but saying that Anderson is NOT essential to Yes is like saying: Freddie is not essential, Plant is not essential, Lennon is not essential to the band...

As a Phish fan and a Dead fan I can say that Phish have very little I common with The Dead musically speaking. Phish are much more Jazz, Prog and compositionally speaking even Zappa influenced than Dead influenced.

Now moving back to the Yes topic, if Anderson is so non essential to the band and their sound, then why do the last two singers try so hard to mimic and copy him?

if Yes are releasing albums without Anderson, he's not essential.

ha I remember seeing that clip before

although it sounds like he is singing his harmony part in that song, which he normally sings....I think?

agree it would have worked better as an instrumental

Yes have been hugely influential on me, and my appreciation of music
