What's your favorite pretentious, bloated and totally overproduced 'epic' of all time? Song length alone does not qualify here as there are many long songs which aren't totally done in by overkill. I'm talking about the song that you feel breaks the 'Wretched Excess' meter. In a good way for you.

My vote goes to this fantastic Peruvian frosting coated gem:

    Nice Thread, OP!
Choosing stuff I really like (think the word "wretched" pre-"excess", may be a little confusingo_O)

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Half State
    (off "Beat The Devil's Tattoo")
The Jesus And Mary Chain - Sidewalking (Extended Version)
    (off "The Sound Of Speed")

    I love some Bombast personally.

I am not taking any of those terms as derogatory, so I can pick a song I love that fits the picture.
Mammoth double kicks. A vocal that sounds like Zeus on a mountain top. Then some vocals that sound like steel finger nails down silk sheets.
To me this is fantastic in all the ways you describe

Supper’s Ready- Genesis. Overlong, pretentious and I love every second of it.

Richard Harris's 'MacArthur Park,' of course. And Procol Harum's 'In Held Twas In I.'

    Both of which I love.

If no Jim Steinman productions appear on page one, I'm disappointed.

Don't know if it's my favorite, but the Grateful Dead's "Terrapin Station" certainly gets bombastic toward the end.

No worries, that was the first thing I thought of too! So to avoid disappointment, here's my suggestion:

Hammy vocal, preposterous arrangement, but it's still a great song.

Can you explain how we could have a favorite "pretentious, bloated and totally overproduced 'epic'"?

Makes no sense. It's like asking us what is our favorite Bon Jovi song. That makes no sense, either. How could someone have a favorite and actually like a Bon Jovi song?

Perhaps you should ask what is our least favorite ""pretentious, bloated and totally overproduced 'epic'"?

I accept that the three songs I picked are massively overblown... and I love them.
I'm really not perturbed what folks think about it either lol
To me "over the top" is just the start

Sometimes a pretentious, bloated over-produced song hits you in all the right ways so that what is usually bad to you is actually a good thing. Like the example in my opening post. It's ridiculously long. It's overdone. It's massively pretentious. But I love it nonetheless.

Of course there are many overblown epics that I can't stand as well. It's a personal thing.

ELP: Tarkus, live and studio version. Use to listen to that song religiously back then.
