I'm turning 52 and almost all of my favorites are post-1980, a representative list being:

    R.E.M.
    Phish
    Stereolab
    Yo La Tengo
    Sonic Youth
    Islands
    Wilco
    The Decemberists
    Okkervil River
    Arcade Fire

unfortunately, I have not enjoyed the most recent releases by the last three very much, though I wanted to ...

I am very pleased to see how often 'R.E.M' are being mentioned here; I had thought there star had waned slightly over the last few years, both with the public at large and on the forum, but I'm glad to see they still have a loyal fanbase online.

For me, if I ever liked/listened to an artist, I'm always going to like/listen to that artist. I don't "grow out" of any music. I hear things less frequently as time goes on because of this--it takes longer to return to an album in my listening rotation as my collection grows--but that doesn't imply that I ever stop listening to anything.

I am the same; I may take a break from a certain act, but if I like their music, I will alway eventually return to it.

You are unquestionably correct. For some reason(s), I remembered to exclude XTC from my list but let the Simple Minds in.
Let's swap the Minds for the Pretenders (respective leaders actually used to like each other very much so I guess it's alright).

Of course The Cure should be excluded too: debut lp released in May '79 and including '78 material.
