I was talking to my 32 year old daughter last night and telling her about this great thread. She asked me what song I picked, and I said it could have been one of about ten choices on any given day, but I picked Such A Night for my top pick for this thread. She asked me for my other top choices, and I mentioned Any Day Now, Kentucky Rain, Suspicious Minds and Unchained Melody, among a few others. I asked her what song she would choose for her top pick and right away she said, Trouble, so you and my daughter obviously have superior taste in music. :agree:

Only one? I guess maybe "It Hurts Me." Killer vocal on that record.

I mean, when E sings Don’t fly away my beautiful bird, that’s heavy duty.

There's too many to choose from, but if I could pick 4 absolute classics that have yet to be picked:

    All Shook Up
    Reconsider Baby
    Surrender
    Power Of My Love

"Don't": Beautiful song, great vocal by Elvis. What elevates this song for me are the brilliant backing vocals by The Jordanaires.

Usually I would say Mystery Train but for the past month I find myself singing (horribly) Stranger in My Own Hometown incessantly...

It's funny, having listened to Elvis for so long and knowing many of his greatest songs, I will admit that listening to him sing 'Always On My Mind' the other day makes me choose that one.
Elvis connects the melody to the emotional story of the lyric and only a few do that. I recall a quote about Tony Bennett saying that he sings words, not lyrics. I feel that is also true in Elvis's case.
But as others have said 'that's the song I'm choosing TODAY'.
I'm very glad I discovered his music, as he gave so many shades of life to us through his music - funny, tender, sad, threatening, macho, easygoing, questioning, accepting, denying, trying to understand - it's all in there for us to hear. He makes it work - I like to think that some of his musicians stuck with him till the end because of what he was making them feel : sometimes elation, but sometimes heartbreak.
He gave us those feelings too. What an incredible gift.

Most definitely, it's "Baby, Let's Play House". It's the greatest rockabilly performance ever put to tape.
