Has it really been 50 years with the same three guys?? Just read they are embarking on their 50th anniversary tour and possibly a new album as well. That's longevity!

I'd love a new album, but I hope they go back to a basics sound, and its actually the three of them playing mostly live (Billy can overdub guitar parts, obviously) and Frank not using a click track to play to. Do a 30-35 minute blues boogie rock album, like the old days.

Yes, and that must be a record. I remember when the first of the Four Tops passed away, that capped 42 years with the same lineup - a record at the time. I'm guessing ZZ Top are probably the current recordholders (although some purists will point out that it's not the original lineup, since their first single didn't have Dusty or Frank). U2 are probably technically the champs when it comes to original lineups, but that's only because they changed their name when the current lineup coalesced.

How about some archival stuff. Warehouse @ New Orleans 1974, anyone?

Which also means it's not quite 50 years yet, but we'll get there, still a good run. The original Scat pressing of "Salt Lick"/"Miller's Farm" is one of my most prized possesions (I have it on the London label too, just in case), but it's not as special nowadays as the somgs are available on CD. They really sound more like Moving Sidewalks songs (it's Sidewalks drummer Dan Mitchell on drums).

The first album is just so raw. Hard to believe it was 1970. Still sounds so fresh and vital.

They played here a few weeks ago and they are on my band bucket list.

I couldn't bear to hack up 70-90 bucks only to hear the MTV stuff that has been ground into the dirt by "classic" rock radio.

A back to basics album would be great; along with some live archival releases as said above.

The 1970 - 1990 albums CD box set is an absolute bargain. Ten albums, all the original mixes and very cheap. If you shop around you should find it for around £20. Good mastering too.

They built their brand the same way Blue Oyster Cult did, a bad ass stage show and a lot of touring. it's cool that they are still at it.

Tush and La Grange etc. are great - no problem there.

I'm talking Gimme All Your Lovin', Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, etc. Synthesizer era, mostly.

    Gag. :hurl:

It's all relative, and I don't like synthesizers any more than you. But all ZZ's stuff rocked better than 90% of their contemporaries throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s and there is nothing in those songs you mentioned that makes any true fans of ZZ want to gag--just a lot of good lyrics delivered with Gibbons' typical understated style and tasty guitar licks.

The gagging is in response to those tunes being desperately overplayed ad nauseum.

Loved them in the day, now change the station when they come on.

    My opinion.

And I AM a true fan - since Fandango. :righton:

Given its the only album of theirs I really like its not really practical is it? Sadly I do not have the money to burn on such a big box for just one album.

They were going for 10 bucks last I heard. Also not a "big box," they kept the packaging to a bare minimum, with only an outer box, and sleeves for each CD, that's it.
