Sins Of Omission An atmospheric build up leads into a raw thumping rock at a moderate to slow pace. This song works pretty well and you can see why a reviewer would say this album has a more stripped back rock sound. It works pretty well .
One Too Many Times This song starts sort of like an Irish Folk song. It becomes a fairly good little song and has a feel like the guys are sitting around a camp fire knocking it out. Not a bad change of style here.
This is probably as good a time to ask as any: WTF is the cover art of "Breathe" supposed to represent?
Bring On The Change Starts off with a fairly busy and quite cool sounding Bass. This isn't a bad song.
Home (featuring Emmylou Harris) It would be hard to imagine Emmylou doing vocals on anything before and including Red Sails, but after that, not so much. This is a nice reflective little song.
This is my favorite song off of Breathe. The production is a bit odd, but it's a great rocking song! Wish they would've played it on the recent tour. My thoughts on Breathe as a whole are less positive, but I do believe that it was a case of the band (or at least some members of the band from what I've read) chasing their artistic muse, not trying recapture their successful past or keep up with current trends. It's an artistic album that I can enjoy when I am in the mood. Unfortunately, I'm not often in the Breathe mood. It's interesting and it may have been the album Midnight Oil needed to make, but it doesn't necessarily capture what the band is best at, that thing that no other band can do. But like the previous album, there are plenty of individual moments I like, while not being completely enamored with the whole thing. And for some reason, I really love the closing instrumental track Gravelrash. Absolutely horrible album cover. Looks cheap and generic. Very much of it's time design wise. I'm sure it did them no favors.
Had to duck in quickly to say that I must buck the trend in really liking Earth and Sun and Moon but for one song; Truganini. A turgid slog of a song. The rest of the album is really good but then I'm a sucker for anything with a hint of psych in it and E&S&M does have a lot of psych touches. This album has to be Midnight Oil's most underrated.

I agree have that and never got fooled again in the remaster games years back...if I did I kept the original always...
Mark, don't get me wrong, it's not 10-1 by any stretch of the imagination but it's actually quite a good album overall. I term it the last of the campfire trilogy (D&D, BSM and E&S&M). Liked all three albums but never loved them. I prefer my Oils albums with a little more piss and vinegar.
E-beat As I say, this is pretty much the first time I have heard this album and I certainly don't dislike it, but it has certainly moved well away from the Oils that I know. This song seems to be steeped in the sounds of the times, which is quite common for most bands. It kind of sounds like the style of songs we would get on diesel and dust with some modern sound additions (for the time) ... kind of a ballad with prosthetics. Pretty decent song.
Barest Degree The band definitely seem to be experimenting with sounds on this album. Again this song is very much in the moderate tempo Oils ballad style, with interesting adornments of sound to ... "bring it up to date"? Another decent song. This album seems like it may well be one of those where you here it and go back to it a few times before you "get it"
I too saw them in Vancouver on this tour and they played in a bloody sit down theatre, great sound but WTF for a rock and roll show. Still really enjoyed the show, but the commercial production and sound on Diesel and Blue Sky really soured me at the time. Time to revisit and reassess those two...
Gravelrash This is a fairly good instrumental. It follows a fairly basic melody and breaks down in the middle nicely. Not the most amazing thing you've ever heard, but a decent sound and feel.
Redneck Wonderland Studio album by Midnight Oil Released 3 November 1998 Recorded 1997 - 1998 Genre Alternative rock industrial rock techno rock alternative metal funk rock blues rock trip hop Length 47:01 Label Sprint Music, Columbia Producer Warne Livesey, Magoo, Midnight Oil Midnight Oil chronology 20,000 Watt R.S.L. (1997) Redneck Wonderland (1998) The Real Thing (2000) Redneck Wonderland is an album by Midnight Oil that was released in 1998 under the Columbia Records label, which peaked at No.7 on the ARIA Albums Chart.[1] The title of the album was inspired by a wall graffiti, a picture of which can be seen in the promotional Oil Rag Vol. VI issued along with album release. The album was certified Gold in Australia in 2014.[2] Redneck Wonderland is the band's penultimate studio album to date. "Concrete" originally performed as "Free My Soul;" known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour.[6] "Cemetery in My Mind" known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour. "Comfortable Place on the Couch" originally performed as "Haulaway;" known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour.[6] "Safety Chain Blues" originally performed as "Warm Babies;" known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour.[6] "Return to Sender", "The Great Gibber Plain" and "Drop in the Ocean" may not have been performed live. "Blot" known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour. (video of 22 November 1997 performance) "White Skin Black Heart" & "What Goes On" both first released on 20,000 Watt R.S.L.; known to be played on 20,000 Watt R.S.L. tour. The tour is noted for the use of a wheel featuring the titles of 64 Midnight Oil tracks. Most tracks from Redneck Wonderland were not played after the tour ended; the title track was generally the only song played, often as the opening track to shows on the Capricornia tour. The track was later placed elsewhere in the set list; "Concrete" and "Comfortable Place on the Couch" occasionally reappeared. ------------------------------------- I actually can't say that I am overly familiar with this album at all. I remember the lead single and title song getting some decent radio play, and I thought it was pretty good, but i never got around to buying the album. I am going to be hearing this for the first time as we go through, so anybody that's reading along that is more familiar, please give us your input. If you have any background on the songs, or album, let us know. What are your feelings about this album? Tell us anything about the album that comes to mind for you and then tomorrow we'll get into the first couple of songs. Cheers
I like my Midnight Oil when they're very "produced" so I generally prefer those produced by Warne Livesey over, say, Nick Launay . ... But as I've popped in a few times on this thread, and have been into the band for 30 years or so, here's my album ranking... 1. Blue Sky Mining 2. Diesel And Dust 3. 10-1 4. Earth and Sun and Moon 5. Red Sails In The Sunset 6. Place Without A Postcard 7. Species Deceases (EP) 8. Redneck Wonderland 9. Capricornia 10. Breathe 11. Head Injuries 12. Midnight Oil
I guess for me (and please bare in mind my lack of familiarity with the later albums) my rankings would be something like 1. 10-1 2. Red Sails in the sunset 3. Diesel and dust 4. Head injuries 5. Place without a postcard 6. Blue sky mining 7. Species Deceases 8. Earth and sun and moon 9. Bird Noises 10. Midnight Oil I don't really feel familiar enough with Breathe, Redneck wonderland and Capricornia to put them in there.
Redneck Wonderland This is the only song that I know, I know of this album. I liked the song when it came out although it seemed to somewhat cater to the current trends in the music scene at the time. The quick drum machine hat and snare beat through the song and the bottom end two or three note guitar riff were plastered across a lot of music at the time. This was very good though and the sound kept the band current to some degree. Of course the title of the song was somewhat confrontational, which seemed to mean that the Oils weren't just making another batch of fairly sweet songs, with more subtle jabs at society. Anyhow, that was an impression and at the time I wasn't interested in getting the album, so what are those who got the album's opinions on this and what's to come... I'll need your help please folks
