Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon - Best sounding CD (updated)

Discussion in 'Music Corner' started by AnyColourYouLike, Oct 21, 2011.

  1. Honestly, I think the Hi-Rez version from the Blu-ray is the best for DSOTM. Kind of a shame they force you to get the Immersion box to hear it.

What is the difference between the 1992 remaster and the 20th anniversary cd?

@Time Is On My Side question for you:

I have an oppo dv-981hd and a cdp 46001 2 harvest made in Japan and it sounds fine. Does this version not have pre emphasis?

You would have to check the matrix number in Google as not all hardware will detect the PE. Mine has - CP35-3017 31A9 CDP 46001 2 for the matrix number.

    https://www.discogs.com/Pink-Floyd-The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon/release/2020149

I am finding that on those original discs that no "TO" in the matrix number is usually an indication of PE.

Yes, I checked the Vernon's site and my copy does have pre-emphasis (Matrix - CDP 7-46001 2 CP35-3017 27B1). However, my oppo must read it since it sounds really good.

It also contains a longer Ticket to Ride instrumental not a shorter edit like some cds’, unless that is more to do with my hearing.:)

What is the difference between the 2011 remaster on CD vs. the hi-res blu-ray (besides resolution)? I thought it was the same mastering.

The redbook clips and has some peak limiting. The blu-ray does not.

Strange that's the first I've heard of the 2011 clipping.

Actually not too surprising. It's a lot louder than the harvest holy grail mastering.

It definitely is louder, but it doesn't clip. Are you sure you're not looking at the 2003 version?

A few songs through out the Discovery 2011 series contain inaudible clipping, (peaks hitting 0)
    The 2003 is a mess

    A sample hitting 0dBFS isn't clipping.

So, the "Non-TO" Harvest Blackface is essentially the same as the "Black Triangle", "non-TO", (so-called "Grail"), and

The TO blackface harvest is essentially the same as having a "TO" black triangle, and

The Harvest Silverface is the same mastering as the "Black Triangle" TO version?

Are all three of these statement correct??

Well now, the tapes of Dark Side of the Moon were digitized less than a decade after the album was recorded (for the release you're referring to), so they had less time to degrade than later CD versions.

Sorry Thomas, I should of stated true peak level, the 2003 has tons of overages
But I don't need waveforms for that one
Quite happy with my 1993 EMI JAX :)

1992 Remaster (Shine On Boxed Set), it's colorful and dynamic. Plus it's the first issue of 'Dark Side of the Moon' I ever heard so I am partial to that version. I really like the MFSL UD1 too. Standard Issue 'Capitol Records' is just about as generic as it gets. The 2003 (redbook) is a mess. The 2011 Immersion is good and the 2015 reissue is really good. I also like the LPCM Hires version on disc 3 of the Immersion.

Here are two audio samples; does anyone else hear or classify a / the glitch in one of these?

20 second duration audio samples from ‘Money’

    Probably more noticeable with headphones

03 has more HF, but it sounds like there's an analogue dropout, rather than a digital glitch to me.
01 is softer in top end and doesn't sound like there is any issue in the same period.

  25. I enjoy my 1985 USA Capitol CDP 7 46001-2 DIDX 226 PDO quite a lot. SO many to choose from.

I also have the immersion set which is another great listen.
